Flies, &c., and four plates illustrating Fishes, Baiting, &c. 12mo. London Bell and Daldy, 1861.

Wagner (Jak.), Der Volkommene Fischer. 8. Wien, 1785.

Waller (Sir Wm.), Divine Meditations. 1680.

[A very rare book. Meditation 20 is of fishing.]

Wallwork (James), The Modern Angler, comprising Angling in all its branches, being the result of more than thirty years' practice and strict observation; together with Remarks on the various Rivers in England, Scotland, and Wales. 8vo. Manchester, 1847.

Walton (Izaac), A Drama. See Dance.

Walton (Isaac, of Stafford), The Compleat Angler; or the Contemplative Man's Recreation, being a Discourse of Fish and Fishing, not unworthy the perusal of most Anglers. 12mo. London, 1653. (Price Eighteenpence). 2nd edit. 12mo. London, 1655; 3rd edit. London, 1664; 4th edit. 12mo. London, 1668; 5th edit., forming the first of the Universal Angler by Walton, Cotton, and Venables. 12mo. London, 1676.

[A facsimile reprint of the 1st edition appeared in 1810. 12mo London, Bagster.

The 2nd edition, which was published only two years after the first, appears to have been almost rewritten, with the introduction of a third interlocutor in Auceps, and great additions in every part.

The 3rd edition, London, 1661 and 1664, has titles of both dates no other variance in the body of the work, but a postscript was first added to this edition touching the laws of angling, and an index.

The 4th edition is a paginary reprint from the third edition. The 5th edition is augmented, and the second part added on fishing for trout and grayling, written by Charles Cotton, Esq., of Beresford. The above are all of the editions of the "Complete Angler," published during the author's life.

The five editions sold at Haworth's sale for 187. 12s. 6d. ; at Milner's, 30%. 9s.; at Higgs's, 257. 2s. 6d. ; at Cotton's, 561. 17s.; and at Prince's, 50%. 10s. The price of the first edition varies from 10% to 20%. according to binding and condition. The other editions in proportion. A copy of the fifth edition, containing an autograph note of Walton, addressed to his friend Mrs. Wallop, sold at Prince's sale for 35%]

Walton and Cotton's Complete Angler. Edited by Moses Browne. 12mo. cuts.

London, 1750. 2nd edit. 1759; 3rd edit. 1772. With

[The 2nd edition was announced as being very much amended and improved; and the 3rd has twenty pages additional matter, with several very useful notes and directions," and the songs set to music. Browne's editing was done with gusto; unfortunately the whim took him to prune and polish his author's style, to suppress passages in his prose, to smooth down roughnesses in his verse, and to adapt him to the over-refined and fastidious taste of the day, a sacrilege all reverent lovers of old Izaac will find it hard to forgive.]

Walton and Cotton's Complete Angler, edited by John Hawkins, Esq., afterwards Sir John Hawkins. 8vo. London, 1760. 2nd edit

1766 (the same as the foregoing, with a new title page); 3rd edit. 1775; 4th edit. 1784; 5th edit. 1792 (edited by John Sidney Hawkins, Esq.); 6th edit. 1797 (edited by the same, but without the large plates); 7th edit. 1808 (printed by Bagster, in three sizes-demy 8vo., royal 8vo., and 4to.); 8th edit. 1815 (edited by Sir Henry Ellis, with new notes, &c., printed by Bagster, at Broxbourne, in two sizes-demy 8vo. and royal 8vo.)

[The 1st edition of this series was advertised 27th September, 1759, as in the press and speedily to be published, in opposition to Moses Browne's 2nd edition, published in that year. On the 18th July, 1760, it was announced as the only correct and complete edition, and the reader was informed that cuts "are now added of the principal scenes, designed by Mr. Wale, and engraved by Ryland, in which the characters are dressed in the habits of the times, which cuts, the reader may be assured, cost, in designing and engraving, upwards of one hundred pounds. Browne put forth a rival advertisement, vaunting his own emendation of the poetry, and declaring the boasted plates "copied from the designs in his, and the life of Walton in chief part borrowed from the one printed by him."

A copy of Hawkins's 1st edition, 4to., sold at Haworth's sale, 27. 11s., and at Valentine's, 17. 4s. At Higgs's sale a copy of the 7th edition (1808), illustrated with above two hundred and seventy prints and drawings from rare portraits, proof impressions of plates of fish, &c., sold for 631. It was bound by Gosden, and the bands of the book made of wood from the door of Cotton's fishing house, taken off near the lock, where it was probable Izaac's hand must have touched it.

Dr. Bethune says, "Gosden's own illustrated copy (if I make out correctly a pencilled note appended by him to my copy of Higgs' sale catalogue), unbound, single leaves, in a portfolio, sold for 1107."]

Reprinted again, London, Washbourne, 1842; 4th edit. re-edited, with a new set of plates by Absolon. 12mo and 8vo. London: Bogue, 1844.

[Until the appearance of Pickering's splendid version of Walton, Major's early editions held the first rank, and even Stothard's illustrations can scarcely be considered to bear away the bell from those of Absolon in the edition of 1844. Dr. Bethune says of this edition, "Art could scarcely go further, and no more elegant volume can find place in a library." Of Major's introductory essay, a well-meant but lamentable piece of twaddle, the less said the better.]
