GOD, JEHOVAH.

GOD IN TRINITY, GOD THE FATHER, HIS NAMES, PERFECTIONS, AND PRAISE.

1. God All.

THE great Jehovah reigns
Upon a throne sublime;
And from his own eternity
Ordains the wastes of time.

This great Jehovah's mine,
The saint in rapture cries;
And to this everlasting Rock
My joyful spirit flies.

From this immortal spring
Immense salvation flows;
And with the wonders of his love
My grateful bosom glows.

His name shall be my song

While life and breath are giv'n; And his unceasing praise shall run Thro' all the days of heav'

2. God glorious.

GREAT God, my Maker, and my King,
Of thee I'll speak, of thee I'll sing;
All thou hast done, and all thou dost
Declare thee good, proclaim thee just.

Thy ancient thoughts, and firm decrees,
Thy threat'nings and thy promises,
The joys of heaven, the pains of hell,
What angels taste, what devils feel.

Thy terrors and thine acts of grace,
Thy threat'ning rod and smiling face,
Thy wounding, and thy healing word,
A world undone, a world restor❜d:

While these excite my fear and joy;
While these my tuneful lips employ;
Accept, O Lord, the humble song,
The tribute of a trembling tongue.

3.

God good.

YE humble souls, approach your God,
With songs of sacred praise,
For he is good, immensely good,.
And kind are all his ways.

All nature owns his guardian care,
In him we live and move;
But nobler benefits declare
The wonders of his love.

He gave his Son, his only Son,
To ransom rebel worms;

'Tis here he makes his goodness known In its diviner forms.

To this dear refuge, Lord, we come,
'Tis here our hope relies ;

A safe defence, a peaceful home,
When storms of trouble rise.

Thine eye beholds, with kind regard,
The souls who trust in thee;
Their humble hope thou wilt reward
With bliss divinely free.

Great God, to thy Almighty love
What honours shall we raise ?
Not all the raptur'd songs above,
Can render equal praise.

4. God the Saint's Portion.

FROM pole to pole let others roam,
And search in vain for bliss;

My soul is satisfy'd at home,
The Lord my portion is.

Jesus, who on his glorious throne
Rules heav'n, and earth, and sea,
Is pleas'd to claim me for his own,
And give himself to me.

His person fixes all my love,
His blood removes my fear;
And while he pleads for me above,
His arm preserves me here.

His word of promise is my food,
His Spirit is my guide;
Thus daily is my strength renew'd,
And all my wants supply'd.

For him I count as gain each loss,
Disgrace, for him, renown;
Well may I glory in his cross,
While he prepares my crown!

Let worldlings then indulge their boast,
How much they gain or spend;
Their joys must soon give up the ghost,
But mine shall know no end.

5. Divine Sovereignty.

KEEP silence all created things,
And wait your Maker's nod:

My soul stands trembling, while she sings
The honours of her God.

Life, death, and hell, and worlds unknown Hang on his firm decree:

He sits on no precarious throne,

Ner borrows leave to be.
