Hayes, of Boston, occupied fine ones, the folios all having more or less in facsimile, and the Waltons being cut-down and inferior copies generally. The collection also included a number of standard sets, which sold at prices below the average. It is probable that if the library had come up for sale a month earlier the prices would have been better. The sale took place immediately after the beginning of the war with Spain, and buyers were temporarily overcautious. Several consignments of remainders from English booksellers were sold during the year. The catalogues for several of these sales were identical. We have not recorded every sale of many of the books, but have included a representative selection. The same may be said of some other modern books. Our compilation is consulted primarily for prices as a guide to estimating values of other copies of the same books offered for sale. To aid the collector in his estimates, we have this year incorporated in the form of notes to 470 of the more important and interesting items records of 1540 previous sales of the same books at auction in England or America. Those who have undertaken to look up a number of previous records of sales at auction will appreciate the fact that the drawing off of these notes has required a considerable expenditure of time. We have this year also, for the first time, prefixed to the date of sale the name of the owner of the library, where such name was made public. As is well known, a book will bring a better price when sold in an important sale than when sold with a quantity of uninteresting items. To have the name of the sale given in the record will, therefore, often remove the necessity of referring to our chronological list. The arrangement is identical with the two preceding volumes. Books are entered under their author, where the author is known; otherwise, under the first important word of the title. To this there are some exceptions. Anonymous histories and biographies will usually be found under their subjects. The publications of clubs and societies are usually under the name of the society; but occasionally publications of some of the minor societies will be found under the name of their author. Different books by the same author are arranged alphabetically by titles, and different editions of the same book are arranged according to date of publication. The autographs are, of course, arranged alphabetically by authors. The date given under each lot is that of the first day of the sale. The full period covered may be found by referring to the chronological list of sales following this preface. The number in parenthesis is the original lot number in the sale catalogue. Books in American auction rooms are sold by the volume, but the prices here given are for the lot, not per volume. In the Index the books are classified by subjects. We have tried to make it especially full in American local history. As many collectors are interested especially in books relating to certain States and towns, local histories have been put under the State and afterward under the town. The names of States have been set in black-faced type and those of the towns in small capitals. The abbreviations used in describing the autographs are well known to all collectors. A. L. S. is Autograph Letter Signed; A. L. is Autograph Letter, unsigned; L. S. is Letter Signed, the signature only autographic; D. S. is Document Signed. September, 1898. L. S. L.
