Eph. v. 20, Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father' in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thes. v. 18, In every thing give thanks` : for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.`

12. Summary of duties to ourselves.-Prov. i. 10, 15, My son, if sinners entice thee', consent thou not. My son, walk not thou in the way with them`; refrain thy foot' from their path. Eph. v. 15, 16, See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools', but as wise', Redeeming the time, because the days are evil`. Eph. vi. 10—18, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord', and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God', that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood', but against principalities', against powers', against the rulers of the darkness of this world`, "against spiritual wickedness' in high places'. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God', that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day', and having done all', to stand'. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace'; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit', which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication' in the Spirit', and watching

thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Phil. i. 27, Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ'; that, whether I come and see you, or else be absent', I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind' striving together for the faith of the gospel. Phil. iv. 8, Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just`, whatsoever things are pure', whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue', and if there be any praise', think on these things`. Col. i. 10, That ye might walk worthy of the Lord' unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work', and increasing in the knowledge of God. Col. iii. 1, 2, If ye then be risen with Christ', seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth' on the right hand of God'. Set your affection on things above', not on things on the earth. 1 John ii. 15— 17, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world', the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh`, and the lust of the eyes', and the pride of life, is not of the Father', but is of the world. And the world passeth away', and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God' abideth for ever'.

XVI. OUR DUTY TO OUR NEIGHBOUR.

1. To be just to him.-Lev. xix. 11, 13, 35, 36, Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another. Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night' until the morning. Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judg. ment', in mete-yard`, in weight', or in measure. Just balances, just weights', a just ephah', and a just hin', shall ye have: I am the Lord your God', which brought you out of the land of Egypt. Deut. xvi. 20, That which is altogether just' shalt thou follow`, that thou mayest live and inherit the land' which the Lord thy God giveth thee`. 1 Thes. iv. 6, That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter'; because that the Lord is the avenger of all such', as we also have forewarned you, and testified'.

2. To do good to him.-Lev. xxv. 35, And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee', then thou shalt relieve him`; yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner`: that he may live with thee. Deut. xv. 10, 11, Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved' when thou givest unto him': because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works', and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto`. For the poor shall never cease out of the land': there

open thine fore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy', in thy land`. Ps. xli. 1, Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him' in time of trouble`. Prov. xi. 24, 25, There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth'; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet', but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat; and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Prov. xix. 17, He that hath pity upon the poor', lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given' will he pay him again. Gal. vi. 10, As we have therefore opportunity', let us do good unto all men', especially unto them' who are of the household of faith. Eph. iv. 32, And be ye kind one to another`, tender-hearted', forgiving one another`, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you`. Heb. xiii. 16, But to do good, and to communicate' forget not`: for with such sacrifices' God is well pleased. 1 John iii. 17, 18, But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him', how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue'; but in deed and in truth.

3. To honour him.-Lev. xix. 32, Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head`, and honour the face of the old man', and fear thy God: I am the Lord'. Rom. xii. 10, Be kindly affectioned one to another' with brotherly love'; in honour' preferring one another`.

Phil. ii. 3, Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind' let each esteem other better than themselves`. 1 Pet. ii. 17, Honour all men. Love the brotherhood'. Fear God. Honour' the king.

4. To love him.-John xv. 12, 13, 17, This is my commandment, that ye love one another', as I have loved you`. Greater love hath no man than this', that a man lay down his life for his friends`. These things I command you', that ye love one another. Rom. xiii. 8-10, Owe no man any thing', but to love one another; for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery', Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal', Thou shalt not bear false witness', Thou shalt not covet'; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself`. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour'; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 1 Thes. iii. 12, And the Lord make you to increase' and abound in love one toward another`, and toward all men', even as we do toward you. 1 Pet. iv. 8, And above all things' have fervent charity among yourselves; for charity' shall cover the multitude of sins. 1 John iii. 15, Whosoever hateth his brother' is a murderer` : and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 16, Hereby perceive we the love of God', because he laid down his life for us`: and we ought to lay down our lives' for the brethren`.
