OF THE

RULES OF ELOCUTION.

THERE are two slides of the voice, or, as they are usually termed, inflections: The upward slide, or rising inflection, denoted by the acute accent, thus'. The downward slide, or falling inflection, denoted by the grave accent, thus `:

EXAMPLES.

Did he say faith', or faith'.
He said faith', not faith'.

Did he say hope, or hope`.
He said hope, not hope.

Did he say charity', or charity`.

He said charity', not charity'.

Before the pupil can apply the inflections in reading, it is absolutely necessary that he have the complete mastery of the above examples. When he can in
