XCIV. Juftification by Faith, not by Works: or, The Lary condemns, Grace juftifies, Rom. iii. 19-22.

I VAIN

AIN are the Hopes the Sons of Men On their own Works have built; Their Hearts by Nature all unclean,

And all their Actions Guilt.

2 Let Jew and Gentile stop their Mouth,
Without a murm'ring Word,
And the whole Race of Adam ftand
Guilty before the LORD.

3 In vain we ask God's righteous Law
To juftify us now,

Since to convince and to condemn
Is all the Law can do.

4 JESUS, how glorious is thy Grace!
When in thy Name we truft,
Our Faith receives a Righteoufnefs
That makes the Sinner juft.

XCV. Regeneration, John i. 13.
iii, 3, &c.

and

NOT all the outward Forms on Earth,
Nor Rites that God has giv'n,

Nor Will of Man, nor Blood, nor Birth,
Can raise a Soul to Heav'n.

2 The fov'reign Will of GoD alone

Creates us Heirs of Grace;

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

3 The Spirit, like fome heav'nly Wind,
Blows on the Sons of Flesh,
New-models all the carnal Mind,
And forms the Man afresh.

4 Our quicken'd Souls awake and rife
From the long sleep of Death;
On heav'nly Things we fix our Eyes,
And Praise employs our Breath.

XCVI. Election excludes Boafting, 1 Cor. i. 26-31.

BUT few among the carnal Wife,

But few of noble Race,

Obtain the Favour of thine Eyes,
Almighty King of Grace!

2 He takes the Men of meaneft Name,
For Sons and Heirs of GoD;

And thus he pours abundant Shame
On honourable Blood.

,,。,

3 He calls the Fool, and makes him know The Myft'ries of his Grace, To bring afpiring Wisdom low,

And all its Pride abase.

4 Nature has all its Glories loft,

When brought before his Throne;

No Flefh fhall in his Prefence boast, a
But in the LORD alone.

XCVII. CHRIST our Wisdom, Righteousness, &C. 1 Cor. i. 30.

URY'D in Shadows of the Night,

BURY'D

We lie till CHRIST reftores the Light; Wisdom defcends to heal the Blind,

And chase the Darkness of the Mind.

2 Our guilty Souls are drown'd in Tears,
Till his atoning Blood appears;

Then we awake from deep Diftrefs,
And fing, The Lord our Righteousness.
Frame is mix'd with Sin;

3 Our very
His Spirit makes our Natures clean;
Such Virtues from his Suff'rings flow,
At once to cleanse and pardon too.
4 JESUS beholds where Satan reigns,

5

I

Binding his Slaves in heayy Chains;
He fets the Pris'ners free, and breaks
The Iron Bondage from our Necks.

Poor helpless Worms in Thee poffefs
Grace, Wisdom, Pow'r, and Righteousness,
Thou art our mighty All, and we

Give our whole felves, O LORD, to Thee.

H

XCVIII. The fame.

OW heavy is the Night

That hangs upon our Eyes,

Till CHRIST with his reviving Light:
Over our Souls arife!

2 Our guilty Spirits dread

3

To meet the Wrath of Heav'n; But in his Righteousness array'd, We fee our Sins forgiv'n.

Unholy and impure

Are all our Thoughts and Ways,
His Hands infected Nature cure
With fanctifying Grace.

4

The Powers of Hell agree

To hold our Souls in vain;

5

He fets the Sons of Bondage free,

And breaks the curfed Chain.

LORD, we adore thy Ways,

To bring us near to Gop;

Thy fov'reign Pow'r, thy healing Grace,

And thine atoning Blood.

XCIX. Stones made the Children of Abraham: or, Grace not conveyed by religious Parents, Matt. iii. 9:

IVAIN are the Hopes that Rebels place
Upon their Birth and Blood,

2

Defcended from a pious Race;
(Their Fathers now with GOD.)

He from the Caves of Earth and Hell

Can take the hardest Stones,

And fill the Houfe of Abra'm well

With new-created Sons.

3 Such wond'rous Pow'r doth he poffefs,
Who form'd our mortal Frame,
Who call'd the World from Emptinefs;
The World obey'd and came.

C. Believe and be faved, John iii. 16—18.

OT to condemn the Sons of Men,:

'NOT

Did CHRIST the Son of GoD appear;
No Weapons in his Hands are Teen,
No flaming Sword, nor Thunder there.
2 Such was the Pity of our GoD,
He lov'd the Race of Men fo well,
He fent his Son to bear our Load
Of Sins, and fave our Souls from Hell.

3 Sinners, believe the SAVIOUR'S Word,
Truft in his mighty Name, and live;
A thousand Joys his Lips afford,
His Hands a thoufand Bleffings give.
4 But Vengeance and Damnation lies
On Rebels who refuse the Grace;
Who God's eternal Son despise,
The hottest Hell fhall be their Place.

[blocks in formation]

WHO can describe the Joys that rife
Through all the Courts of Paradife,

To see a Prodigal return,

To fee an Heir of Glory born?
