confiderably, the first Chapter, which treats of the Learned Moderns: Tho' fome perhaps will think it too large already, and that it might better have been contracted. I have omitted feveral Moderns mention'd by Tentzelius, whofe profefs'd Defign was to take in all: Mine is only to take the principal, or as many as may fuffice to give the Reader a full and diftinct Idea how this matter has flood, with the learned Moderns, for 85 Years laft paft.

In this Second Edition I have confiderably shorten'd my Appendix, by throwing the feveral Parts of it into the Book it self, referring them to their proper Places. Some few additional Obfervations will be found, here and there interfpers'd, and fome Corrections, of flight moment as to the main Thing (in which I make no Alteration) but contributing in fome measure to the Perfection and Accuracy of the Work.

I must beg my Reader's pardon for fome Overfights of this Impreffion, occafion'd by my Abfence, or Avocations. They are all of the fame kind, as will be feen by the Inftances.

The PREFACE.

Page 56 in the Table, Bertram ftands at the Tear 864, as in the First Edition: But in This, p. 40, I place Him in 868, to which the Table should have been conformable.

Page 156, I alter the Date of Pope Adrian's donation to S.Willehad from 788, as Lambecius had fix'd it, to 787, as Mabillon fets it. The fame Correction Jhould have been made p. 159, but is not: and the number 6 in the last line of p. iss, Should have been chang'd into 7, to make all conformable.

Page 160, where I speak of the Reception of the Athanafian Creed in Italy, I fay, I am content to fuppofe the fame time for it, which I have before named for our own Country. Thus the words ran in the first Edition, and were then right when I had made the date for its Reception in England 880: But having in this Impreffion made it 800, inftead of 880, the words in p. 160, should have been altered, to make them confiftent with the new Correction.

If

If there be any other fmaller Slips of this kind, which have efcaped my notice, the intelligent Reader when He obferves them, will eafily know how to amend them. As to other Errata, I have not obferved any worth the noting; and am therefore willing to hope that the Reader will find this Impreffion in the main tolerably Correct.

I conclude with profeffing, as before, that I shall be very glad if what hath been here done may but prove an useful Introduction to more and larger Difcoveries. If Any thing confiderable ftill remains, either in private Hands, or publick Repofitories; Any thing that may be ferviceable to clear up fome dark Part, or to correct any Miftake, or to confirm and illuftrate any important Truth relating to the Subject; I shall be very thankful to the Perfon that shall oblige either Me with private notice, or the Publick with new Improvements.

N p. 280, under Object. VI. I endeavor to confute a Report raised of the Commiffioners in 1689, as if They had unanimously refolved that the ATHANASIAN CREED fhould be no longer impofed. I refer to Dr. CALAMY'S Account of that Affair, which fpeaks of a RUBRICK prepared by the Commiffioners.

I have fince received a Copy of that very RUBRICK, which I fhall here add, for the Information of the Reader, and to put an end to all further Difpute upon that Head.

And the condemning Clauses are to be underflood as relating only to thofe who obftinately deny the Subftance of the "Chriftian Faith.

This, word for word, is the Rubrick as it was fettled and finally agreed on by the Commiffioners in 1689, and as it stands in the Original Book now in the Hands of my LORD Bishop of London...
