PSALM XXIII.

THE LORD is my Shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.

He shall convert my soul and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for His Name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me.

Thou shalt prepare a Table before me against them that trouble me: Thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.

But Thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the House of the Lord for ever.

BEFORE COMMUNION.

Lo! the Angels' Food is given
To the pilgrim who hath striven;
See the children's Bread from Heaven,
Which on dogs may ne'er be spent :
Truth, the ancient types fulfilling,
Isaac bound, a victim willing,
Paschal Lamb, its Life-Blood spilling;
Manna to the fathers sent.

Very Bread, Good Shepherd, tend us;
Jesu, of Thy Love befriend us;
Thou refresh us, Thou defend us,
Thine eternal goodness send us
In the land of life to see :

Thou Who all things canst and knowest,
Who on earth such Food bestowest,
Grant us with Thy Saints, though lowest,
Where the Heavenly Feast Thou showest
Fellow-heirs and guests to be. Amen.

I.

ACCORDING to Thy gracious word,
In deep humility,

This will I do, my dying Lord;

I will remember Thee.

Thy Body, broken for my sake,

My Bread from Heaven shall be ; The Cup, Thy precious Blood, I'll take, And thus remember Thee.

When to the Cross I turn mine eyes,
And gaze on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my Sacrifice,

I must remember Thee:

Remember Thee, and all Thy pains,
And all Thy love to me;

Yea! while a breath, a pulse remains,
I will remember Thee.

And when these failing lips grow dumb,
And mind and memory flee,

When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come,
Jesu! remember me.

To Thee, O Jesu, Light of Light,

All praise and glory be ;

To God the Father Infinite,

And, Holy Ghost, to Thee. Amen.

II.

I AM not worthy, Holy Lord,

That Thou shouldst come to me; Speak but the word: one gracious word Can set the sinner free.

I am not worthy; cold and bare

The lodging of my soul;

How canst Thou deign to enter there?
Lord, speak, and make me whole.

I am not worthy; yet, my God,
How can I say Thee nay?

Thee, Who didst give Thy Flesh and Blood
My ransom price to pay.

O come! in this sweet morning hour,

Feed me with Food Divine,

And fill with all Thy love and power

This worthless heart of mine.

Amen.

III.

BREAD of the world, in mercy broken,
Wine of the soul, in mercy shed,
By Whom the words of life were spoken,
And in Whose death our sins are dead.
Look on the hearts by sorrow broken,
Look on the tears by sinners shed,

And be Thy Feast to us the token

That by Thy grace our souls are fed. Amen.

IV.

BREAD of Heaven! on Thee we feed,

For Thy Flesh is Meat indeed;

Ever let our souls be fed

With this true and living Bread.
Day by day with strength supplied
Through the life of Him Who died.
Vine of Heaven! Thy Blood supplies
This blest Cup of sacrifice.

Lord! Thy wounds our healing give,
To Thy Cross we look and live;

Jesu, may we ever be

Rooted, grafted, built on Thee. Amen.

V.

ONCE, only once, and once for all,
His precious life He gave;
Before the Cross our spirits fall,
And own it strong to save.
"One offering, single and complete,"
With lips and heart we say,
But what He never can repeat
He shews forth day by day.

For, as the Priest of Aaron's line
Within the Holiest stood,
And sprinkled all the mercy-shrine
With sacrificial blood;

So He, Who once atonement wrought,
Our Priest of endless power,
Presents Himself for those He bought
In that dark noontide hour.

His manhood pleads where now It lives
On heaven's eternal Throne,
And where in mystic rite He gives
Its Presence to His own.

And so we shew Thy death, O Lord,
Till Thou again appear;

And feel, when we approach Thy Board,
We have an Altar here.

All glory to the Father be,

All glory to the Son,

All glory, Holy Ghost, to Thee,

While endless ages run.

VI.

Amen.

JESU, Thou Joy of loving hearts!

Thou Fount of Life! Thou Light of men!

From the best bliss that earth imparts
We turn unfilled to Thee again.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood;
Thou savest those that on Thee call;
To them that seek Thee, Thou art good,
To them that find Thee, All in all.
We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still;
We drink of Thee, the Fountain-Head,

And thirst our souls from Thee to fill.
