But before I enter upon this, I desire it may be considered, that the point in Hand, being a Marter of Fact, is inca. pable of receiving such a rigorous Demonstration, as that by which a marhe. matical Propolition may be proved And in this Case no more can be required, than that it be arrested by Persons of unquestionable Knowledge and Fidelity.

This being premised, I shall endeavour with all possible Brevity and Plainnels to Ahow,

First, That the Resurrection of CHRIST is clearly related in the Scriptures.

Secondly, That those who related this, were Persons of unquestionable Knowledge. And

Thirdly, That they were Persons of unquestionable Fidelity

These Propositions being made good, the Truch of my Text, I conceive, will be fufficiently establishda Firs. Then I am co show, that the


Bcfurrection of Christ is clearly related in the Scriptures. - And I need not fairy long upon this Head; the Man who des Dies ir, muli be an utter Stranger to the facred Pages. Forin them we frequcitly read that the Body of Christ was buried in a Tomb kewn out in a Rock, that a great Stone was laid to the Door of it; which, after some time, was rolled away by an Angel, whereupon CHRIST arole, and left the Grave Cloaths behind bin. This is recorded by every one of the four Evangelists: The same Persons who mena tion his State of Humiliation, give us an Account of his State of Exaltacion coo; the same Persons who have perined the History of his shameful and slavilh Death, have [kewise registred his glorious and triumphant Resurrection from the Dead, Sr. Mattbew says very planly, that an Angel told the Woman who came to the Sepulchre to seek Jesus, that he was not there, but was risen. St. Mark says the fame Thing, almost in the same Words. St. Luke lays, that the Woman entred in. to the Sepulcbre, and found not the Body of JESUS; and it came to pass as they were much perplex'd about it, two dien food by them in shining i arments, who faid, W by Jeek ge the Living among the


Dead? He is not here, but is risen. And St. John says, that as Mary, wept, because she could not find the lody of her Lord, The turned berjelf back and aw FESUS standing, whom tho' at firkt Sight she did not know, yet upon his fpeaking to her, she quickly perceived to be her Malter. Neither do the Evangelists give us only the Testimony of others to this Truth, but they confirm is also by their own perfonal Knowledge: They tell us thac CHRIST shewd himlelf to his Disciples in the same Body which was crucified, dead and buried; that they all talked with him and chat he eat with thein after his Re, surrection ; as may be seen at large in the last Chapters of the Gulpels to this we inay add, that the same Doctrine is deliver'd directly, or by Consequence, in every part of those Writings which are extant of the other Apostles. So that nothing can be more evident than that che Resurrection of CHRIST is clearly related in che Scriptures; which was the first Thing to be made out. I shall now go on, to flow, . Secondly, That those who related this, were Portons of unquestionable Knowledige; or in other Words, that they were thoroughly infosa'd concerning ic Fact which they relared, and perfectly knew the Truth of thar which they delivered. And this Point will be dispatched as easily as the former: For St. Luke tells us, Aats i. 3. chat Christ.fbew'd himself alive to them after his Passion, by many INFALLIBLE Proofs

. Of which no Body can well doubr, that considers First, How often Christ appeared to his Disciples after his Death ; and Secondly, The manner of his Conversation with them.

As to the first of these, we read of no less than ten times of his Appearance before his Ascension. First of all at the Sepulchre to Mary Magdalené, out of whom he had caft seven Devils. Then to other Women as they returned from the Scpulchre, towards Jerusalem. Then to Cephas ; then to two of his Disciples, as they went into the Country, the same Day towards Emmaus. Then to ten of them in the Evening of the fame Day, Tbomas being abfent. Tlien to all the Apostles, Tbomas being with them. After these Things, to the Disciples at the Sea of Tiberius. Then to above five huna dred Brethren at once. After that to James. Then to all the Apostles, immediately before his Ascension. To which

We uray, add, chat he was seen twice af ter his Ascension, clothed with the highest Glory and Happiness in Heaven; to wir, once by St. Stephen, and once by St. Paul

And if we farcher consider the manner of his Conversaţion with them, while he was on Earth, we cannot but allow that they were fully certified of his Recurrecsion. For he continued with them for a long time together ; discoursing upon the molt Noble and sublime Subjects ; giving them the most admirable Lectures in Divinity, and expounding the Scriptures wich such a surprizing Strength and Exactness, char that their hearts burn'd szeithin em, even before they know who he was. After which, at another Time of his Appearance, least they might supposc that they had seen a Spisic; he cat in their Presence & Piece of a broild Fish, and of 3n Honey-Comb; and moreover bid pheim handle him, that they might know that bekad Flesh and Bones, wbicha Spirit bath 1920t. And ar anocher Time, he commandcu Tiomas to put bis Finger into the Print of the Vails, and to thružbis Hand into the Side which was pierc'd.
