ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep: We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts: We have of fended against thy holy Laws: We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders: Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults: Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Here all standing up, the Priest shall say, Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; (b)

This Psalm following, except on Easter-day, upon which another Anthem is appointed.

Psalm xcv. (c) O COME, let us sing unto the Lord let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.

2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and shew ourselves glad in him with Psalms.

3 For the Lord is a great God: and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also.

(b) i. e. "Spirit."

(c) A spirited invitation to the public Worship of God, noticing the dependence of all things upon Him, and referring to the punishment he inflicted on the Israelites for a particular instance of their distrust.

(d) "To-day, &c." From reminding the Hebrews by this passage, how God had before punished their forefathers for their disbelief and distrust, after the signal instances he had given of his power, &c. the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews presses them to regard and attend to the proofs which had been given that Jesus was the Christ, lest they should also be punished for their disbelief and distrust. Heb. iii. 7. to Heh. iv. 10. Should not this be a lesson to us also?

(e) This refers to what passed in the time of Moses, about 1450 years before Christ. God had promised the Israelites the Land of Canaan, and twelve men were sent, one from each tribe, to view it: The re

8 To-day (d) if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts : as in the (e) provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;

9 When your fathers tempted me proved me, and saw my works.

10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said: "It is a people that do err "in their hearts, for they have "not known my ways."

port of all but two, Caleb and Joshua, was, that the inhabitants were Giants, stronger than the Israelites, upon which the people murmured against Moses and Aaron, and wanted to return to Egypt, and God said, "As I live, saith the Lord, all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from 66 20 years old and upwards, doubtless you shall not come into the Land concerning which I swear to make you "dwell therein, save Caleb, the son of "Jephunneh, and Joshua, the son of Nun, " and your children shall wander in the "Wilderness 40 years." Numb. xiv. 28 to 34. and see Deut. i. 22 to 38. And accordingly the children of Israel "walked 40 years in the Wilderness, "till all the people that were men "of war which came out of Egypt, were consumed." Josh. v. 6. See also Ps. cvi. 24.

Psalm xcviii. (i) OSING unto the Lord a new song for he hath done marvellous things.

(i) A spirited triumphal Hymn, upon some signal instance of God's assistance. Dr. Hammond thinks it an abridgment of the Song of Moses, in Exod. xv. after the destruction of the Egyptians, about 1550 years before our Saviour's birth, which is much earlier than any heathen composition now in being.

(m)"Let the sea," &c. It is highly v. poetical to call upon the inanimate parts of the creation to join in praising God. Similar instances occur Ps. xcvi. II. and Ps. cxlviii. 3, 4, &c. and see Ps. lxv. 14.
