PREFACE.

HE AUTHOR of this work is aware that there are many similar productions, and that these contain excellent meditations and useful reflections; but they generally fail to bring out clearly the ideas contained in the text chosen for the day. Having selected his text, he has endeavoured to make its leading ideas clear and prominent, and to state and illustrate its truths in as few words as possible. His object is not to make reflections; but to furnish materials for reflection, that he may the better arrest the attention of the reader, and give a right current to the train of thought. He has done what he could to provide daily reading of a scriptural, devotional, and practical kind; and as in this age of hurry and business, many have little time to read Treatises or Sermons, he has made his sketches as short and as attractive as possible. That this work may prove, by the Divine blessing, useful to its readers, is the earnest prayer of the Author.
