PREFACE.

THE following Lectures were in substance composed for delivery to the Agricultural Society of Chemistry in Saxony. Encouraged by the approval they received there, and from many other agricultural associations in Saxony to whom they were subsequently delivered, the Author was induced to print them. The first part was published in 1851, the second (Chaps. xii.-xxiv.) in 1853. The first portion has not only passed through a second edition in Germany, but has also been translated in America.

In offering this English version to the public, the Editor can conscientiously speak most favourably of the principles laid down and the skill with which all the more important and settled facts of chemistry, bearing upon Practical Agriculture, have been rendered comprehensible to the general reader. The careful manner in which the main points are explained in all their details, renders notes in most cases unnecessary, but a few illustrations and additions are here and there introduced by the Editor, especially in reference to matters which have been discussed more fully since the Lectures were written.

In the Appendix also is given a brief notice of the conflicting views of Liebig and Lawes, in reference to the theory of manuring, of which it may be said that not only has the latter the best of the argument from experimental proofs, but the abstract facts of Vegetable Physiology are almost all in his favour. Mr. Mechi has also kindly furnished some valuable information on the subject of Irrigation with Liquid Manure.

Sept. 1855.

A. HENFREY.
