13. Shire of Elgin

Takes its Name from Elgin, a Royal Burgh, where are the Ruins of an ancient Caftle, and one of the most stately Churches in Scotland: It comprehends part of Murray. The Shire of Elgin is bounded upon the North by the Frith and the River Nefs, which feparates it from Invernessfhire; to the Eaft it's feparated from Bamfffhire, by the River Spey To the South it hath Bauenoch, and to the Weft, part of Lequbaber. The whole Country of Murray, of which this Shire is a Part, is about 30 Miles long, and 20 broad. The Air is very wholfome, and the Winter mild. The Low Country has very much Corn, which is soon ripe; but the High Country is fitter for Pafture. Here are many great Woods of Firr and other Trees, 10 Miles long, with fome large Woods of Oak. Elgin gives the Honour of Earl to James Bruce, Eart of Ailsbury Kinross is very near Elgin, and gives the Title of Baron to the Earls of that Name. Sir James Dunbar of Weftfield is Heritable Sheriff of Elgin.

14. Shire of Fife.

An excellent Country, wedged in by the Forth and the Tay, fhoots out far to the Eaft. It abounds with Corn and Pafture; in fome places, with Lead, Ore, and Coal; the Seas yield great Quantities of Fish, as well Shell-Fish as others: Near the Forth is the Town of Culross, near that is Kincardine; in the fame County is Dumfermling, once a famous Monaftery, built by King Malcolm III. who was there interred. Upon the fame Shore ftands Dyfert. Here alfo is St. Andrew's, once the See of the Primate and Metropolitan of all Scotland; and here is Cowper a Royal Burgh, where the Sheriff fitteth to adminifter Justice, upon which Account this Shire is called fometimes the Shire of Cowper. The Hereditary Sheriffdom of this Shire is in the House of Rothes, the HeirsMale of which Family failing in the Perfon of John Lefly the late Duke of Rothes, his eldeft Daughter Margaret, Countess of Rothes, being Marry'd to Charles Hamilton, Earl of Haddington, had John Lord Lefly, Earl of Rothes, who fucceeded his Mother to the Earldom of Rothes, and the Privileges thereunto belonging.

15. Shire of Forfar or Ingus.

This Sheriffdom comprehends Angus, bounded on the South with the Ocean, and the Frith of Tay. Upon the Weft and North-west 'tis divided from Perthshire by a Line 27 Miles long; towards the North, the Ridge of Binchinnin Mountains parts it from the Brae of Marr; and to the Eaft it's feparated from the Mernes, by the River Tarf, and a Line drawn from it to the River North Eske, which to its Mouth continues to divide this Shire from the Mernes. 'Tis in Length about 28 Miles, and in Breadth about 20. Here are feveral Quarries of Freeftone and much Slate, with both which they drive a good Trade, Near the Caftle of Inner Markie are Lead Mines, and they find great

Part II. Plenty of Iron Oar near the Wood of Dalboge. The higher Ground called the Brae, abounds with Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Roebucks and Fowls; and their Salmon Trade turns to a good Account: Near the Tay's Mouth is Dundee, a Town well frequented, driving a good Foreign Trade, well built, and having an Hofpital for the Poor: The Conftable of this Town, by a peculiar Privilege, was formerly Standard-bearer to the Kings of Scotland. Brechin is a confiderable Market Town for Salmon, Horfes, Oxen and Sheep: It has a stately Bridge over the River South Eske, and is famous for a memorable Slaughter of the Danes not far from it. In this County it was that the General of the Danes was killed by the Valiant Keith, who thereupon was advanced to great Honours by King Malcolm II. who was in Person at that Battel. Upon the General's Grave, there was a high Stone erected, ftill called Camus's Cross; and about 10 Miles distant from this, is a Crofs, erected over the Sepulchre of fome of the Danes that were killed there. Both thefe have fome Antique Pictures and Letters upon them. Aberbrothock, corruptly Arbroth, is a Royal Burgh, hath a Harbour for Ships, and an Abby endowed formerly with ample Revenues, confecrated to the Honour of Thomas of Becket by King William I of Scotland, the Founder, who lies buried there under a ftately Monument. The Sheriffdom is in the King's Difpofal.

Contains East Lothian, which like the reft of Lothian is a very fine Country. The chiet Towns are Dumbarr, once a Place of great Strength, remarkable of late for the Victory obtain'd by Cromwell against King Charles II. and the Scots who afkifted him, 3. September 1650. Haddington, a Royal Burgb, which gives the Name to this Shire. The Sheriffdom of this Shire is at the King's Difpofal, and is now poffeft by the Marquis of Twedale.

17. Shire of Inverness,

Comprehends a Part of Murray, Loqubabir, Badinock, and fome of ther little Countries; 'tis bounded on the South by the Brae of Marr and Athol, on the Weft by the Weftern Sea; on the North by Rofs, and on the Eaft by Part of Murray Frith. The length of Loquhabir from Inverlochee to Inverness, in a strait Line, is 50 Miles. It has Plenty of Iron Ore, great Woods of Firr, with fome large ones of Oak. Inverness is the Head Town, where the Sheriff keeps his Court; it is commodiously feated upon Loughness, which renders it convenient for Trade. The Lough is 24 Miles long; the Water thereof is almost always warm, and all the Year long is never fo cold as to freeze; nay, in the fharpeft Winter, if Cakes of Ice are thrown into it, they will be quickly thaw'd by the Warmth of its Waters. Badenoch, which is Part of this Shire, abounds with Deer and many other Conveniences and Loquhabir is a very pleasant Country, and for Multitude of Fish, both falt and fresh, fcarce any Country in Scotland can compare with it.

Badenoch, Loquhabir, and Marr, take up all the Breadth of Scotland, between the Deucalidonian Sea and the German Ocean. The Sheriffhip is at the King's Difpofal. The prefent Sheriff is Lodowick Grant of that Ilk.

18. Shire of Kincardin,

So called from the ancient Town of Kincardin, includes the Mernes, a little Province, bounded by the German Ocean on the Eaft; on the South by the River North-Eske; on the Weft by the Grainsbane-Hills; and on the North with the River Dee. It's about 26 Miles in length, and about 20 Miles broad. The Soil rich, and generally level. The moft memorable Place in it is Dunotyr, a Caftle fituated upon a high and inacceffible Rock, fortify'd with ftrong Walls and Towers at certain distances; an ancient Seat of the Noble Family of the Keith's, who in recompence of their Valour, have been long Hereditary Earls-Marthals of Scotland, now attainted. Upon the Sea-Coasts are several convenient Creeks, and fome good Harbours, whereof Stone-hive is one of the beft; and for its greater fafety, the Earl Marshal, who has a SalmonFishing on the North-fide of the Harbour, has raised a Peer of Stone. Where the Water of Cowy falls into the Sea, ftands Cowy. Beneath the Town are the Ruins of a Caffle, built, as 'tis faid, by Malcolm Kenmore, who made the Town a Free Burgh, On the Lands of Arbuthie and Redeloak, are fome Trenches to be feen, caft up by the Danes at one of their Invasions made upon those Parts; and round the Hill of Urie is a deep Ditch, where the Scots Encamp'd. Dunotyr-Caftle ftands upon a Rock, wafh'd by the Sea on three Sides, and join'd to the Land only by a narrow Neck.
