meister's) Handbuch der musikalischen Literatur," Leipzig, 1828, etc.; "Jahrbuch der Musikbibliothek Peters," Leipzig, 1895, etc.; Aber's "Handbuch der Musikliteratur," Leipzig,

1922.

Other miscellaneous sources, not mentioned in the main bibliography, are the collections of playbills, programmes, and libretti at the British Museum and elsewhere; the Mattheson manuscripts and opera text-books at the Hamburg Library; the sale catalogues of various London sale-rooms, and Book Prices Current.

Although the present volume does not deal with Handel and his work on the technical side, it may be of interest to indicate the whereabouts of some of the larger collections of his manuscripts and printed editions. A very good summary and index is to be found in Rockstro's "Life of Handel," but since the publication of that work several of the collections have changed hands and other information has become available. A detailed catalogue of all the Handel manuscripts is needed, but only the larger collections are mentioned here.

MANUSCRIPTS (AUTOGRAPHS AND COPIES).

1. The British Museum contains the Royal Collection from Buckingham Palace (loaned to the nation by H.M. the King), the Granville Collection (purchased in 1915), and miscellaneous items acquired at various times by purchase or gift.

Catalogues of some of the works are available, other catalogues are in preparation.

2. The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, contains the manuscripts mentioned in the catalogue by Fuller-Maitland and Mann, issued in 1893, and also the collection of manuscripts formerly in the possession of F. B. Lennard and acquired by the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1902. 3. The Hamburg Library collection of copies, formerly in the possession of Kerslake of Bristol and Victor Schoelcher.

4. The Newman Flower collection, Sevenoaks, which includes most of the Aylesford manuscripts.

Catalogue issued 1921.

5. The Foundling Hospital. A small collection.

COLLECTIONS OF PRINTED EDITIONS AND
HANDEL LITERATURE

1. The British Museum. The national collection of printed music includes an enormous number of Handel items, which has been considerably increased by editions in the Royal Collection.

The works are catalogued as received, and a catalogue of the Royal Collection is in preparation.

2. La Conservatoire de Musique, Paris, contains Schoelcher's collection of many printed editions, and a vast array of Handel literature.

3. The Newman Flower collection, besides the manuscripts already mentioned, includes many first and other printed editions, pictures, portraits, and a considerable amount of Handel literature.

4. The Library of the Royal College of Music contains, amongst other collections, the works formerly in possession of the Sacred Harmonic Society.

Catalogue by W. Barclay Squire, issued in 1909.

COLLECTED EDITIONS OF HANDEL'S WORKS

1. The works of Handel, edited in score by Samuel Arnold. London [1785-97].

2. The works of Handel. Printed for members of the Handel Society. London, 1844-58.

3. Georg Friedrich Händel's Werke. Ausgabe der Deutschen Händelgesellschaft. Herausgegeben von F. Chrysander. Leipzig [1859, etc.].

Most of Handel's works were published during his lifetime by Cluer, Meares and Walsh (father and son), but the Walsh issues were very erratic and subject to much modification. No adequate printed list is available, although manuscript notes formerly in the possession of Julian Marshall, and now at the British Museum, are an attempt towards a bibliography of early editions of Handel's works. Walsh published a catalogue, which is referred to by various writers, but the author of the present work has not been able to trace a copy. Most of the titles, as given in the bibliography, have been taken directly from copies of the works, but in some cases the information has been obtained from other authorities.

Brackets [ ] have been used to indicate matter which does not occur in the works referred to.
