The Epiftle. St. James 1. 1.
AMES a servant of God, and of the Lord Jesus

Christ, to the twelve cribes which are scattered abroad greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations : knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering : for he that wavereth is like a wave of the Sea, driven with the wind and toffed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways. Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted ; but the rich, in that he is made low; because as the power of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner rifen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the Power thereof fallech, and the grace of the falhion of it perishech : so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation ; for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

The Gospel St John xiv. 1.
ND Jesus said unto his difciples, Let not your heart

be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Fathers house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you:

PA RA PHRASE. truth, and the life, (John xiv. 6.) and that following the steps of thy holy A poities, Si Philip, and St James, and all holiness of living, we may shun che broad way which leadeth to destruction, and enter the narrow way which leadeth unto iife ; (Mart. vii. 13, 14.) and this we pray for the sake of Jesus Chriii our Lord. Amen.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that were I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go, ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas faith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest, and how can we know the way ? Jesus faith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comech unto the Father but by me. If yé had known me, ye should have known my Father also ; and from henceforth, ye know him, and have seen him. Philip fàich unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus faith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet halt thou not known me, Philip? He that hath 'seen me, hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then? Shew us the Father? Believeft thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you, I speak not of myself; but the Father that dwellech in me, he doeth the works. Believe me, that I am in the Father, and the Father in me : or else believe me for the very works fake: Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth on ine, the works that I do, Ihall he do also, and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my FatherAnd whatsoever ye shall ask in my Name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall alk any. thing in my Name, I will do it.

Lord God Almighty, who didit endue thy holy

Idings of these things came unto the ears of the Churcht

which was in Jerusalem : and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had feen the grace of God, was glad, and exhortcd them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and fult of the holy Ghost, and of faith ; and much people was added un

; to the Lord. Then departed Barnabas co Tarsus for to seek Saul. And when he had found him, he brought him unco Antioch. And it came to pals, that a whole year they afsembled themselves with the Church, and taught much people ; and the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there ftood up one of them, named Agabus, and fignified by the Spirit, that there should be great dearth throughout all the world ; which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cefar. Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to fend relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea. Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

The Gospel. St John xv, 12.
HIS is my commandment, that ye love one another,

as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his Lord doeth: but I have called you friends ; for all things that I have heard of my Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain ; that whatsoever ye

shall ask of the Father in my Name, he may give it you.

PA RA PHRASE beseech thee to impart to as a' Mhare of the diversity of gifts of thy hely Spirit, as far as thou shalt judge them requisite and nece Stary for our salvation, and give us grace likewise to make a proper use of those talents with which thou hast endowed us ; all which we ask for the fake of Jesus Chriit our Lord. Amen.

Saint John Baptist's Day.

The Colle&t.

Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour, by preaching of repentance ; Make us so to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching, and after his example, constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truths sake, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Epistle. Isaiah xl. 1. TOmfort ye, comfort ye my people, faith your God.

Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned; for the hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desart a high-way for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all Aesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice said, Cry. And he said, What Thall I cry ?

On the COLLECT for Saint John Baprift. O almighty God, whose all-wise providence caused John Baptist to be miraculoully born of an aged father, his birth being accompanied by the ministry of an angel, and other wonderful accidents, (Luke i. 13.) who didit likewise fend the same John to prepare the way to the Gospel of our blessed Saviour, by preaching the doctrine of repentance, give us grace to copy after those excellent rules, which his boly doctrine and exemplary life have reached out to us, grant that we may fincerely repent of all our fios, as he constantly exhorted us by his preaching, that like him we may not be afraid to declare the truth for the sake of any errors, but boldly reprove a sinful conduct, even in persons of the first rank ; and if thou art pleased to call us to it, we may with intrepidity lay down our lives for righteousness fake ; and shis we pray for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Aesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flowen of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: furely the people is grass. The grass witherech, the power fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand for ever. O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain :

Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength ; lift it up, be not afraid : say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God. Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him ; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The Gospel. St Luke i. 57.
Lisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered ;

and she brought forth a fon. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had thewed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pafs that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not fo; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindied that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.' And he asked for a writing-cable, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake and praised Go!. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them; and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill-country of Judea. And all they that had heard them, laid them up in their hearts, faying, What manner of child Mall this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blefied be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and hach raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his fervant David; as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets,
