4 Thou the whole body wilt present
Before thy Father's face;
Nor shall a wrinkle or a spot
Its beauteous form disgrace.

The humble Request.-ANONYMOUS.

FATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss

Thy sovereign will denies,

Accepted at the throne of grace,
Let this petition rise:

2 "Give me a calm, a thankful heart,
From every murmur free;

The blessings of thy grace impart,
And make me live to Thee:

3 "Let the sweet hope that thou art mine, My life and death attend;

Thy presence thro' my journey shine,
And crown my journey's end."

Perseverance.-ANONYMOUS.

Hampshire 166. Israel 168. Arlington 17. ORD, hast thou made me know thy ways? Conduct me in thy fear;

And grant me such supplies of grace,

That I may persevere.

2 Let but thy own almighty arm
Sustain a feeble worm,

I shall escape secure from harm,
Amid the dreadful storm.

3 Be thou my all-sufficient friend,
Till all my toils shall cease,
Guard me through life, and let my end
Be everlasting peace.

The Christian Race.-DODdridge.

AWAKE, my soul! stretch every nerve,

And press with vigour on:

A heavenly race demands thy zeal,
And an immortal crown.

2 "Tis God's all-animating voice
That calls thee from on high:
"Tis his own hand presents the prize
To thine aspiring eye.

3 A cloud of witnesses around
Hold thee in full survey;

Forget the steps already trod,
And onward urge thy way.

4 Bless'd Saviour! introduced by thee,
Have we our race begun,

And crown'd with vict'ry, at thy feet
We'll lay our laurels down.

GREAT Leader of thine Israel's host,

We shout thy conquering name:

Legions of foes beset thee round,
And legions fled with shame.

2 A vict'ry glorious and complete,
Thou by thy death didst gain;
So in thy cause may we contend,
And death itself sustain !

3 By our illustrious General fired,
We no extremes would fear;
Prepar'd to struggle and to bleed,
If thou, our Lord, be near.

4 We'll trace the footsteps thou hast drawn To triumph and renown;

Nor shun thy combat and thy cross,
May we but share thy crown.

The Christian Warrior crowned.-Doddr. 82. Brook Street 155. Funeral Thought 269. Evans 190. 1 HARK! 'tis our heavenly Leader's voice, From his triumphant seat!

'Midst all the war's tumultuous noise,
How powerful and how sweet!

2 "Fight on, my faithful band," he cries,
"Nor fear the mortal blow:

Who first in such a warfare dies,
Shall speediest vict'ry know.

3 "I have my days of combat known,
And in the dust was laid;

But thence I mounted to my throne,

And glory crowns my

head.

4 "That throne, that glory, you shall share;
My hand the crown shall give;
And you the sparkling honours wear,
While God himself shall live."

5 Lord! 'tis enough; our souls are fir'd
With courage and with love;

83.

Vain are th' assaults of earth and hell,
Our hopes are fix'd above.

The Sabbath and Heaven.-COTTON.
Arundel 147. Cyprus 194. Serenity 249.

1 THIS is the day the Lord of life

Ascended to the skies;

My thoughts pursue the lofty theme,
And to the heavens arise.

2 Think of the splendours of that place,
The joys that are on high;
Nor meanly rest contented here

With worlds beneath the sky.

3 Heaven is the birth-place of the saints,
To heaven their souls ascend;
Th' Almighty owns his fav'rite race,
Their Father and their Friend.

4 Oh! may these lovely titles prove
My comfort and defence,

When the sick couch shall be my lot,
And death shall call me hence.

THE

PART I.

HE Lord of Sabbath let us praise,
In concert with the blest,

Who joyful in harmonious lays,

Employ an endless rest.

2 Thus, Lord, while we remember thee,
We blest and pious grow,

By hymns of praise we learn to be
Triumphant here below.

3 On this glad day a brighter scene
Of glory was displayed,

By God th' Eternal Word, than when
The universe was made.

4 He rises, who mankind hath bought,
With grief and pain extreme;

'Twas great to speak the world from nought, "Twas greater to redeem.

Jehovah-Jireh.

The Lord will provide.-
COWPER.

Arundel 147. Smithfield 184.

PART II.

HE saints should never be dismay'd,
Nor sink in hopeless fear;

For when they least expect his aid,
The Saviour will appear.

2 This Abraham found, he rais'd the knife, God saw, and said, "Forbear;"

Yon ram shall yield his meaner life;
Behold the victim there.

3 Once David seem'd Saul's certain prey; But hark! the foe's at hand;

Saul turns his arms another way,
To save th' invaded land.

4 When Jonah sunk beneath the wave,
He thought to rise no more;
But God prepar'd a fish to save,
And bear him to the shore.

5 Blest proofs of power and grace divine,
That meet us in his word!
May every deep-felt care of mine
Be trusted with the Lord.

6 Wait for his seasonable aid,
And though it tarry, wait:
The promise may be long delay'd,

85.

But cannot come too late.
