with the time of the return; he shall view every book before he enters the return of it, and, if damaged, shall report the same to the Directors.

ART. 3. No book shall be taken from the library, but at the time above mentioned, nor at such time, except in the presence and by the permission of the Librarian, or one of the directors who may officiate as such, under the penalty of one dollar for each offence.

ART. 4. No proprietor shall take out more than two books at a time.

ART. 5. No proprietor shall detain any book longer than four weeks, under the penalty of 25 cents for every week after that time.

ART. 6. Every book shall be brought into the library on the Wednesday preceding the day of the Annual Meeting, under a fine for the non-observance of this article, of one dollar for each volume.

ART. 7. If any book be returned damaged, the proprietor for whose use it was taken shall pay such a sum as the directors shall determine; if any book be lost, the proprietor for whose use it was taken out, shall pay such a sum as the directors may determine, or replace the book, or if it be one of a set, he shall pay the value of the set, to be estimated by the directors, and take the remaining volumes to himself.

ART. 8. No person shall lend any book belonging to the library, except to a proprietor entitled to take out books, under a penalty of one dollar for every offence.

ART. 9. Every fine and penalty shall be paid to the Treasurer within thirty days after the same shall have been incurred for the breach of these articles, in default of which, the delinquent proprietor shall be deprived of the use of the library until the same shall be paid.

ART. 10. No book shall be delivered from the library, but to a proprietor in person, or his written order.

PORTSMOUTH ATHENÆUM was incorporated June, 1817. In 1829 John Fisher, Esq. of London, gave his Library in this town, amounting to nearly three hundred valuable volumes, to the Athenæum. In February, 1830, James Edward Sheafe bequeathed one thousand dollars to the Athenæum, which sum was invested in the purchase of Books for the Library. In October, 1843, Horace Appleton Haven bequeathed two thousand dollars to the Athenæum, one moiety for the purchase of Books, the other moiety for the preservation of the Library. These sums have been invested accordingly.

The Library of the Athenæum now contains Seven Thousand and Thirty-Nine Volumes, and numerous Maps and Charts.
