descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life ; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a Priest continually.

4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a

commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham :

6 But he whose descent ? is not counted 3 from them received tithes of Abraham, d and blessed e him that had the promises.

7 And without all contradiction the less 4 is blessed of the better.5

• NUMB. xviii. 21, 26 : I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

11 5 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another Priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron ?

12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity, a change also of the law.

13 For he of whoin these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

14 For it is evident that hour Lord sprang out of Juda ; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident : for that as it may be said. Pu.

18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the 'weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

19 For the mlaw made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of ' a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

CHAP. VIII. 1 By the eternal priesthood of Christ the Levitical priesthood of

Aaron is abulished : 7 and the temporal covenant with the fathers, by the eternal covenant of the Gospel.

NOW of the things which we have spoken this is the sum : We have such an High Priest, who is a set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens ;

2 A minister of the sanctuary,' and of the • true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

3 For d every High Priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices : wherefore e it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a Priest, seeing that there are Priests ? that offer gifts according to the law :

5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God 3 when he was about to make the tabernacle : for, See, saith he, that thou make all things 6 according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount.
