then, that thief shall die. Tim. i. 8—11. But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; knowing that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly, and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, for man-slayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for men-stealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine. Ps. 1. xviii. When thou savedst a thief, then thou consentedst unto him, and hast been partaker with the adulterers. Prov. xxix. 24. (See above.) Rom. ii. 21. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that sayest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Mal. iii. 8-11. Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes, and offerings? Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, and that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Acts viii. 9. 18-23. But there was a certain man, called Simon, which before-time in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one. And when Simon saw, that through laying on of the Apostle's hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money: thou hast neither part, nor lot in this matter: for thy Keart is not right in the sight of God. Repent, therefore, of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thy heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Matt. xxiii. 25. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make

clean the outside of the cup and platter, but within they are full of extortion, and of all uncleanness. 1 Cor. v. 11. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother, be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner ; with such an one, no, not to eat. Luke xviii. 11. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 1 Cor. vi. 10. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. Luke iii. 13, 14. And he said unto them, Exact no more than is your due. And the soldiers also demanded of him, saying, And 'what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages. Prov. xxii. 16. He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. Jer. xvii. 11. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool. Ps. ciii. 6. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all them that are oppressed. Lev. xix. 35. Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. Lev. xxv. 14. And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour's hand, ye shall not oppress one another. Deut. xxv. 13, 14. 16. Thou shalt not have in thine house divers weights and measures, a great and a small. Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the Lord thy God. Prov. xx. 10. Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord. 1 Thess. iv. 6. (See above.) Deut. xix. 14. Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's land mark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it. Deut. xxvii. 17. Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's land

mark. And all the people shall say, Amen. Ps. xxxvii. 21. The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. Amos viii. 4, 5. Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath that we may set forth meat? making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? Rom. xiii. 6, 7. For for this cause pay ye tribute also; for they are God's ministers attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Prov. xi. 26. He that withholdeth corn the people shall curse him; but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it. Prov. xxviii. 8. He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor. Luke xvi. 11. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who shall commit to your trust the true riches? Lev. vi. 1-5. See section 2. 1 Cor. vi. 6-8. But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers, Now, therefore, there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong, or suffer wrong? Why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? Nay ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren. Hosea iv. 2, 3. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, yea the fishes of the sea also, shall be taken away. Col. iii. 25. But he that doeth wrong, shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. Prov. xxviii. 19. He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough. Prov. xxi. 17. He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man; he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. James ii, 15, 16, If a brother, or a sister, be

naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto him, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 1 John iii. 17. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother hath need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him. Deut. xv. 9. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, the seventh year, the year of release is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the Lord against thee; and it be sin unto thee. Matt. vi. 25, 26. 31-34. Therefore, I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air, they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Therefore, take no thought, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your hear venly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Eccles. vi. 2. A man to whom God giveth riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil thereof. Prov. vi. 6-8. Go to the ant thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise; which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. 2 Thess. iii. 10-12. For even when we were with you this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. Ephes. iv. 28. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give

SECTION IV.

1 Tim. vi. 6. 17. But godliness with contentment is great gain. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us all things richly to enjoy. Mark x. 23, 24. And Jesus looked round about him, and said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard it is for them that trust in uncertain riches to enter into the kingdom of God! James iv. 4. Ye adulterers, and adultresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Prov. xi. 4. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. Matt. vi. 24. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other: ye cannot serve God and mammon. Col. iii. 2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Rom. viii. 28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 1 Tim. vi. 9, 10. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Heb. xiii. 5, 6. Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee; so that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. 1 Pet. v. 7. Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. Matt. vi. 9-13. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come.
