ESUS said: This is the Father's will Which hath sent Me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day. The Jews then murmured at Him, because He said, I am the bread which came down from heaven; and they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that He saith, I came down from heaven? Jesus therefore answered, and said unto them: Murmur not among yourselves; no man can come to Me, except the Father Which hath sent Me draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

The Creed was not said according to ancient use; you may therefore kneel down, if it is said, and occupy yourself with prayer. OFFERTORY. He that heareth My Word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and

and undivided Unity, this oblation, which I offer Thee by the hands of Thy priest, for myself a most miserable sinner, and for my own innumerable sins which in thought, word, and deed I have sinned against Thee; praying Thee, that Thou wouldst forgive the past, and preserve and guard me in the future.

Receive also, O Lord, this same oblation for all the living committed or commended to me; for the souls of my parents, friends, and enemies; for the souls of all that rest in Christ, especially the soul of N., that they may enjoy the fellowship of Thy Saints for ever.

O Eternal Father, and God of all goodness, I beseech Thee by Thy boundless love, that Thou wouldest receive the gifts, which Thy priest offers Thee in Thy sight to-day, and which I join with him, even although I am an unworthy sinner: nevertheless I offer, O God, to Thy supreme Majesty

Thy beloved Son, Who suffered for me, His Blood being poured forth upon the altar of the Cross. Receive O Lord God, this spotless host, this sweet sacrifice, and behold this Thy family gathered together in Thy Name, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the Cross. Look, I beseech Thee,

O most merciful God, even upon this my soul, look upon me, O my God, O my God look upon me, and turn not away Thy face from me, Thy child and Thy servant; for I will discover my cause to Thee, I will unfold my trouble, I will commit into Thy hands myself, my soul, my body, all my wants and necessities, my heaviness, and my sorrow. I offer Thee all my intention, the oblation of this great and prevailing Sacrifice for the soul (or souls) for whom I plead to day; I offer Thee my works, my prayers, my alms, for their salvation and happiness: of Thy divine mercy, love, and goodness, keep and protect them, grant them rest and peace, full pardon and remission, and in the end everlasting life. Amen.

SECRET COLLECTS.
For a man deceased.

GRANT, O Lord, we be-
seech Thee, that the soul
of Thy servant N. may profit

by this oblation: which Thou hast given to be offered for the sins of the whole world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For a woman deceased. Let the soul of Thine hand

maid N., O Lord, be delivered from all sins by this Sacrifice, without which none

can be set free from trans

gression: and grant that by this service of atonement she may obtain everlasting mercy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For many deceased persons. We beseech Thee, O Lord, favourably to behold this oblation, which we offer unto Thee for the repose of the souls of Thy servants: and grant, that that which Thou hast vouchsafed shall be healing to the quick, may likewise become help and pardon to the dead. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Other prayers. WORSHIP, praise, and bless Thee, O sweetest Lord Jesus Christ, and I give Thee thanks for all the love and faithfulness with which Thou didst overcome death, and rise from the dead, and glorify our flesh, by ascending in it to the right hand of the Father; beseeching Thee that Thou wouldest now vouchsafe to make the soul

for which I pray, a partaker of Thy triumph and glory. Amen.

I worship, praise and bless Thee, O sweetest Lord Jesus Christ, and I give Thee thanks for all the graces Thou hast ever bestowed upon Thy blessed Mother and on all Thine elect; in union with the gratitude and thanksgiving, with which all Thy Saints exult in the bliss, Thou hast obtained for them, through Thy holy Incarnation, Passion, and glorious Resurrection ; beseeching Thee that Thou wouldest vouchsafe to accept in behalf of this soul, all the prayers and intercessions of this same glorious Virgin and all Thy Saints, for the remission of his sin, for whatever is lacking in him of his own fault and frailty, and for his everlasting peace and rest. Amen.

Proper Preface for the departed. Page 71. ¶ Prayers which may serve till the Consecration.

LORD Jesus Christ, in memory of Thy blessed Incarnation, Passion, and Death; in memory of all Thy wounds, and griefs, and sighs, and tears, and drops of blood and sweat; in remembrance of Thy boundless love, from which for my sake Thou wert born, didst suffer, wast crucified, and didst die, I offer to Thee now this victim of Thy most sacred Body and Blood and in union with this oblation, and with that which Thou didst once for all make upon the altar of

the Cross, I offer myself to Thy praise, glory, and good pleasure, humbly beseeching Thee by Thy bowels of mercy to receive all these things, and to offer them to Thy Father, in that virtue and merit that Thou didst give up Thy Spirit to Him, when dying upon the Cross; so that Thou mayest of Thy bounty grant grace to the living, rest to the departed, and to all of us mercy and everlasting life. Yet particularly do I implore Thee in behalf of the soul of N. Save him, and help him, I humbly beseech Thee, O Lord.

I worship, praise, and bless Thee, O sweetest Lord Jesus Christ, and I give Thee thanks for that love wherewith Thou, the Creator of all things, didst vouchsafe for and bound, and taken away our redemption to be seized to judgment, to be buffeted and spit upon, to be scourged and crowned with thorns, to be condemned to bear Thine own Cross, to be stripped and nailed to the Cross, to die a most bitter death, and to be pierced through with the lance. And in union with that love I offer Thee these my unworthy prayers, beseeching Thee to blot out and efface utterly, through the merits of Thy most holy Passion and Death, whatsoever this soul, for which I pray, has ever done against Thy will, by evil thoughts, or

words, or deeds; and that Thou wouldest vouchsafe to offer to God the Father all the sorrow and the anguish of Thy torn Body, and of Thy desolate Soul, all Thy merits, and all Thy works, for all that banishment Thy servant has incurred at the hands of Thy justice. Amen.

At the Consecration:

HAIL, Salvation of the

world, eternal Word of the Father, true Victim, living Flesh, very God, and very Man.

I worship Thee, Thou living Food of the Angels, and most excellent Bread from

heaven; I worship Thee, O eternal Word of the Father,

that was made Flesh for us;

Thou true God, and true Man, consecrated on this Altar, and become present after a wholly wondrous and spiritual manner.

I worship_ _Thee, and I praise Thee, Thou sure hope

and certain salvation of sinners; Thou most worthy remedy of weak and sorrowful souls, Thou exceeding

treasure of those in want; therefore do all Thy creatures, in heaven, in earth, and under the earth, give Thee praise and thanksgiving, because coming down from heaven with such mighty love to us, Thou didst offer Thine innocent and priceless Body upon the Cross for us, and didst with such goodwill, affection, and goodness leave us in this

Sacrament the living and undying monument of Thy departure, as a pledge of Thine exceeding and excelling love towards us.

Thou, therefore, O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us, and grant us, and all Thy faithful departed, Thy peace; refresh us ever with this spiritual Food, that

neither in life nor in death.

we may ever be separated from Thy boundless lovingkindness. Who livest and reignest, God, world without end. Amen.

O Salutaris Hostia. O saving Victim, slain to bless, Who op'st the heavenly gate to all the attacks of strength in strife, and help many a foe oppress, give

in fall.

[blocks in formation]

Thee in lowliest devotion, I worship, praise, and bless Thee.

O Sacred Blood, save him. O roseate Blood, cleanse him.

O most precious Blood, cry for me and for all unto God the Father, that He may have mercy upon us.

IN the midst of life we are in death; of Whom may we seek for succour, but of Thee, O Lord, Who for our sins art justly displeased? Yet, O Lord God most holy, O Lord most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us not into the bitter pains of eternal death. Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not Thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, Thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall

from Thee.

We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with

Thy precious Blood; and make them to be numbered with Thy Saints, in glory everlasting. Grant them, Lord, everlasting rest, and let perpetual light shine upon them, with Thy Saints for ever, for Thou art merciful. ¶ Prayers from the Consecration to the Communion. LOOK down now, O Lord holy Father, from Thy

sanctuary, from the highest heaven Thy dwelling place, and behold this ever sacred Victim, which Thy High Priest, Thy holy Child our Lord Jesus Christ offers Thee for the sins of His brethren, and be Thou favourable to the multitude of our iniquities. Behold the voice of the Blood of Jesus our Saviour cries to Thee from the

Cross. Look down, O Lord, upon the face of Thy Christ, Who became obedient for us even unto death; let not

His stripes be ever away from Thine eyes, that Thou mayest call to remembrance what great satisfaction Thou hast received from Him for our sins. Let every tongue,

Father, give Thee thanks and praise for Thine overflowing goodness, Who didst not spare the only Son of Thine heart, but didst deliver Him up to death for us all, that we might ever have Him in heaven before Thee, as our faithful Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

O Father of mercies, lo here is that living Victim, which here and everywhere
