in Thy praise and glory. I beseech Thy mercy, O Lord, that on the Bread to be offered to Thee may come down the fulness of Thy blessing, and the hallow ing of Thy Godhead. Let there likewise descend, O Lord, that invisible and incomprehensible majesty of Thy Holy Spirit, as of old It came down upon the sacrifices of the fathers, Which may make our oblations Thy Body and Blood; and may He teach me, Thy unworthy priest, to treat so great a Mystery with purity of heart and devotion of tears, with reverence and awe, so that Thou mayest receive with grace and favour, the Sacrifice at my hands, for the salvation of all, both the living and the dead.

THANKSGIVING.

79. Pious affections. O good Jesus, what have I in heaven but Thee, and what upon earth have I wished for apart from Thee? Now is my desire full, the joy of my heart full because Thou art my fulness, all my good and all my desire. Refresh, O Lord, my hungry soul; inflame my coldness with the fire of Thy love; enlighten my darkness with the brightness of Thy presence. Turn for me all earthly things into bitterness; all low and cre

:

ated things into contempt and disregard. Raise my heart up to Thee in heaven, and suffer me not to wander upon the earth. Let the virtue of this Sacrament, I beseech Thee, penetrate my innermost being: and mortify and pull up whatever is evil and vitious in me. In Thee, O most sweet Jesus, be all my delight let joy be weary to me without Thee; let all rest that is not in Thee be bitter to me. Send forth from Thee, most_gracious Jesus, the rays of Thy love, that will kindle me, and burn up and utterly consume all that is earthly in me: so that I may glow with the unquenchable fire of Thy love, and the old man within me entirely decay. O that the flaming power of Thy love might so carry me away, that it may change me into Thee, absorb me into Thee, and make me one with Thee!

O my

80. Act of love. God! I love Thee: nor do I love Thee that Thou mayest save me, or because Thou wilt punish with eternal fire those who love Thee not. Thou, O my Jesus, didst embrace me upon the Cross: Thou didst bear the nails, and spear, and manifold disgrace, and griefs and torments numberless, and sweat and agony and death; and all this for my sake, for me a sinner. Then why, O most loving Jesus Christ, should I not love Thee well? not for

obtaining Thy salvation in | Thou, with Thy Son and the

heaven, or that Thou mayest not condemn me for ever, nor for the hope of any reward; but as Thou hast loved me, so I love and will love Thee, solely because Thou art my King, solely because Thou art my God. Amen.

81. Thanksgiving. I render Thee thanks, O holy Lord, Father almighty, eternal God, Who, not for my own merits, but only out of the condescension of Thy mercy, hast vouchsafed to feed me a sinner, Thy unworthy servant, with the precious Body and Blood of Thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ. And I pray, that this Holy Communion may not bring guilt upon me to condemnation, but may intercede for me to my pardon and salvation. Let it be to me an armour of faith, and a shield of good purpose. Let it be to me a riddance of all vices, an extermination of all evil desires and lusts; an increase of love and patience, of humility and obedience, and all virtues: a firm defence against the wiles of my enemies, visible and invisible; a perfect quieting of all my impulses, fleshly and spiritual a firm adherence to Thee, the one true God; and a blessed consummation of my end. And I pray Thee, that Thou wouldest vouchsafe to bring me, a sinner, to that ineffable feast, where

Holy Ghost, art to Thy Saints true light, full satisfaction, everlasting joy, complete delight, and perfect happiness. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

82. Oblation. Behold, O God, my protector, and look upon the face of Thy Christ. For lo, Thy Son hath so communicated Himself to me that I am in Him, and He is in me; lo, He hath made Himself one with me, and I am become one with Him. Therefore Him do I offer unto Thee, O most loving Father, as sweet incense, on account of His exceeding glory and honour, in thanksgiving for all Thy benefits; in remission of my sins, and the sins of the whole world; to obtain for myself, and all for whom I have prayed and am bound to pray, every succour for temporal and eternal life; and for the souls of the faithful departed. Receive, O Lord, together with this most sacred oblation, my soul and body, my strength and affection, that I may be a continual burntoffering unto Thy Majesty, ever burning; mercifully grant that henceforth I may keep neither my members, nor senses, nor powers, nor my life, save to love and serve Thee. Amen.

83. Reparation for injuries. O most patient Jesus, Who art affected by repeated and countless insults in Thy

Sacrament, I detest, abomi- | nate with my whole heart all those injuries that have been done against Thee by sinners. I beseech Thee then by the unspeakable love of Thy most Sacred Heart, that Thou wilt be both for us and for them, a propitiation with Thine almighty Father. Kindle within me, O Jesus, by the presence of Thy Body, a burning zeal; so that I may take all pains to bewail the sacrileges that have been committed, and hinder any from being further committed. 84. Prayer. O most dear Lord Jesus Christ, do Thou pierce through the affections of my very inmost soul with the most sweet and healthful wound of Thy love, with true, calm, most holy, apostolic charity, that my soul may ever languish and melt with the sole love and desire for Thee, that it may desire Thee, and depart into Thy courts, long to be dissolved and to be with Thee. Grant that my soul may hunger after Thee, the Bread of Angels, the refreshment of holy souls, our daily and supersubstantial Bread, Who hast all sweetness and savour, and every pleasurable delight. Grant that my heart may ever hunger after and feed upon Thee, Whom the Angels desire to look into, and my inmost soul be filled with the sweetness of Thy savour. Grant that my soul may ever thirst for Thee, the

fountain of life, the fountain of wisdom and knowledge, the fountain of eternal light, the torrent of pleasure, the richness of the house of God. Grant that it may compass Thee always, seek Thee, find Thee, stretch towards Thee, attain to Thee, meditate upon Thee, speak of Thee, and do all things for the praise and glory of Thy Name, with humility and discretion, with love and delight, with readiness and affection, with perseverance even unto the end. And do Thou alone always be my hope, my whole trust, my riches, my delight, my happiness, my joy, my rest and tranquillity, my peace, my enjoyment, my fragrance, my sweet savour, my food, my refreshment, my refuge, my help, my wisdom, my portion, my possession, my treasure, in Whom my mind and my heart may be firmly and unchangeably fixed and rooted, henceforth and for evermore. Amen.

85. Supplication for the necessities of others. O almighty Lord God, the Father of Christ Thy blessed Son, that hearest those that rightly call upon Thee, and knowest the prayers even of them that speak not: we give Thee thanks for that Thou hast accounted us worthy to partake of Thy holy Mysteries, which Thou hast granted us, that we may be fully persuaded of those

of Thy power; that being defended both within and without by Thee, I may come by a straight way to Thy kingdom. Amen.

PREPARATION.

O God,

87. Worship. Trine in persons, and One in essence; and Thou, O Lord Jesus Christ, true God and Man, I worship Thee with my whole heart; and I confess that Thou art my true and only Creator, Saviour, and my last end; and forasmuch as my worship is too slender and feeble, I offer to Thee that excelling worship which continually Thy most sacred Humanity pays Thee, and Thy most glorious Mo

things which we already well know; for the keeping of piety and devotion, and the remission of sin; inasmuch as the Name of Thy Christ hath been called upon over us. Thou that hast separated us from communion with the wicked, unite us with those that have been consecrated to Thee; stablish us in the truth by the coming of the Holy Ghost, reveal to us the things of which we are ignorant; supply what is wanting; confirm what we already know. Keep Thy priests blameless in Thy worship; preserve kings in peace, magistrates in justice; grant fair weather, the fruits of the earth in plenty; keep the world with Thine almighty Providence ; cause warlike nations to be still; convert the erring; hallow Thy peo-ther, and the whole Court of ple; keep those that are Heaven, as well as that virgins; protect the married which the holy Catholic in fidelity; strengthen the Church, Thy beloved Spouse, continent; confirm the weak; offers Thee. enlighten the blind; and gather us all into the kingdom of heaven, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with Whom be all glory, honour and worship to Thee, and the Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen.

86. Conclusion. Abide in me, O most merciful Jesus: be Thou the continual defence and health of my soul and body, Drive away from me mine enemies which lay wait for me: let them depart far hence from the presence

88. Love. Above all, O Lord, with my whole heart and soul, with all my strength, I love Thee, and I long to love Thee above all things; and were it possible, I would desire to love Thee with that most perfect love with which Thou lovest Thyself, and with which Thy most sacred Humanity, and the glorious Virgin Mary, with all the heavenly Court, and the holy Catholic Church love Thee.

89. Contrition. And since, O Lord, Thou art infinitely

good, wise, mighty, just, and merciful, therefore I grieve with my whole heart; and above everything do I detest all my sins, mortal and venial, which in thought, word, and deed, from the first moment when I had the use of reason, up to this present time, I have ever committed. And in place of my own very imperfect grief, I offer Thee that bitter contrition, which the holy prophet David, holy Peter, and holy Mary Magdalene, yea, and all true penitents from the beginning of the world till now ever had; together with the absolute will and wish by the help of Thy divine grace, of never offending Thee any more.

90. Satisfaction. And because, O Lord God, it is not in my power to make satisfaction for so many debts to which, on account of my sins and offences, acknowledge that I am more than tied and bound; therefore in satisfaction of them I offer Thee all my life, my works, my labours, pains and griefs which I have borne, and shall hitherto have to bear, together with the merits of the life, passion, and death of Thy Only-begotten Son; seeking most humbly pardon of my faults, and begging Thine effectual grace, that I may truly repent of them before my death.

91. Oblation. Besides, O Lord, together with this my

sacrifice, I offer and consecrate myself wholly to Thee to Thy honour and eternal glory, in union with that most burning love and that pure intention, with which at the last Supper Thou didst give Thyself to us for food, and didst offer a sacrifice of blood for us upon the altar of the Cross; and instead of my slender preparation, and my little devotion, I offer to Thee that deep humility, love, and purity with which Thy holy Mother and all Thy faithful servants approached this most holy Sacrament; and adorned with which Thy Apostles, yea, all Thy holy priests, have offered to Thee this tremendous Sacrifice, from Thy first institution until now; and adorned with which Thy holy Catholic Church now offers everywhere in every place. Amen.

92. Direction of the intention. O heavenly Father, gracious Father of mercies, receive to-day at the hands of Thy servant, this most holy Sacrifice, the true Body and Blood of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in satisfaction and remission of my sins, for the health and hallowing of my soul, and of all those to whom I am bound by any obligation; for all the pastors of Thy Church, that Thou wouldest vouchsafe to make them partakers of the grace of Thy Holy Spirit, for the health of all souls, and the governing of all Christian
