V. 6. According to (5) his way, i. e. his way of life, the Shall establish his ways: the reading of the Kethibh, way he is to pursue in life (as I understand it); not “according to חן Ch. XXII.—V. 1. Loving favor. The adj. 1 is here added to strengthen the expression (comp. Gesenius, Lex. i, 1, c, extr.); and its effect is best represented by the rendering of the Common Version. Many (e. g. Ewald, Maurer, Hitzig) construe as pred. (better than); but its position in the sentence is against this view. V. 3. The shrewd (1): see the note on ch. 1 : 4, second and third paragraphs. Saw, etc. (the concr. instead of the abstr. statement), followed here by the consec. Imperf. (Kethibh). In the next mem to his disposition and habits" (pro ratione morum et indolis, Gesenius, Lex. ), for then the second member, though not without force, wu'd be far less significant. Litigation: contending at law, in distinction from go, finds in reality no proper place here, although the sentiment in itself is excellent, and agreeable to the tenor of the Scriptures." * Maurer: Et virga insolentiæ ejus (virga qua insolentia ejus castigabitur) parata est. * So, I find, it is understood by Bertheau. And put (520), Gram. ¿126, 6, c.* For thou puttest (Ewald and others) is not the natural construction of this familiar combination. V. 5. Flit over it, etc. (see Expl. Notes), according to the Kethibh (comp. Gram. ¿147, a),† which is doubtless the correct reading. The constructions, wilt thou let thine eyes flit (Gesenius), which is not an authorized use of Kal, and shall thy glance flit (Ewald, *Maurer: manifesto est Præteritum relativum, quo qui præcedit Jussivus continuetur. † Maurer (Heb. u. Chald. Hdwbch., art. 1): sollen fliegen deine Augen? was die Differenz des Num. bei vorgesetztem Verb. nicht hindert. And birds: 17, as in many Mss. and printed editions.* This reading is also the most pertinent in the connection.† V. 7. As he thinks. So Gesenius (Lex.), Rödiger,‡ Maurer, Bertheau.
