V. 19. An unsteady foot. The sense is the same, whether (with Gesenius) we regard as Kal Part. (, Gram. 27, Rem. 1), or (with Rosenmüller and Ewald, after Kimchi) as Pual Part. for, or (with Winer) as a noun, pes vacillationis.

V. 20. So is he, etc. Lit. And he; the Vav copulative connecting this act with the two preceding ones, as being a third of the same nature and character as the other two. It may, therefore, be expressed either in connection with the particle of comparison, or by the copulative alone, as is done in ch. 27: 21.

There are but four examples of this structure of the proverb, viz. this verse, v. 25, and chs. 26: 21, 27: 21. In all, the might properly be expressed by the simple copulative; but this would here, perhaps, be too harsh and unusual a construction in English.

V. 23. Brings forth compare Ps. 90: 2.* The rendering in the Common Version follows the Vulg. dissipat pluvias, for which there is no grouud.†

A covert tongue (0), that seeks a cover or disguise, for some evil purpose, in distinction from one that is open and frank in its utterances. There is a manifest allusion to the etymological meaning of 153.

V. 27. Is not: the force of continued from the first member and readily suggests itself without being expressed. Their (Gram. 152, 3).

Their searching after honor (the Suff. referring to the complex idea). So Gesenius, Thes. (art. pn), and Lex. (art. 15).*

This is the proper meaning of the Masoretic punctuation of the common Heb. text. The latter is given in all the Mss. of Kennicott and De Rossi; and the former is confirmed by the reading (1) of fifty-nine of Kennicott's Mss.

The only objection to this rendering, see Gesenius, foot-note (*), is the use of the possess. pron., their, without an antecedent. But of this there are other examples, † where the reference naturally * Thes. vol. I. p. 515: 72 71 p, quæ ad verbum esse possint et investigatio honoris i. e. nimium honoris studium (cf. rad. Job 28: 3, et similem usum Job 3:21) non est honor (negandi particula ex superioribus repetita, v. Lgb. p. 832). Sed molestum est Suffixum in 7, etc.

searching, viz. of any and all who make the search. There is no occasion, therefore, for the proposed conjectural changes of the Heb. text (Arnoldi and others, more recently Bertheau), without any authority of Mss.

V. 28. Whose spirit (15-, Gram. 123, 1).*

Ch. XXVI.-V. 7. Hang down. This is the true meaning, whether (with Gesenius, Thes. and Lex. 3, 1) we regard the Heb. form as b, or (with Maurer†) as an irregular punctua tion of 3 (Gram. 875, Rem. 4) from . The meaning,
