THE superiority of a methodical classification of books is so great compared with a mere alphabetical arrangement, that the publisher of the present catalogue trusts he need make no apology for having adopted it. Its advantages are sufficiently obvious it enables the student at one view to obtain a knowledge of the works connected with the subject that may most engage his attention; if forming a library, it will assist him in proportioning its respective parts; and if completing one, it will show him the gaps which require to be filled up; while, with the appended index of names, it possesses all the convenience of the mere alphabetical arrangement.

The guides in the classification here adopted, have been the Introduction to the Scriptures, by the Rev. Hartwell Horne; the first volume of his Catalogue of the Library of Queen's College, Cambridge; the Bibliotheca Parva Theologica of the Rev. Dr. Burton, Regius Professor of Divinity; and the Handbuch der Theologischen Literatur of Dr. George Winer, Professor of Theology at Erlangen. Notwithstanding, however, the value of these guides, and the advantages of the methodical over the common form, the publisher is too well aware of the imperfections of this attempt not to implore the indulgence of the reader; while he still hopes to merit some praise for his endeavour to render a bookseller's catalogue more useful and interesting. A synoptical table of contents, and an alphabetical index of authors are given to facilitate the means of reference.
