that every one that killeth any perfon unawares may flee thither 34 Defile not, therefore, the land which 16 And if he finite him with an inftrument LORD dwell among the children of Ifrael. ye thall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the of iron, (fo that he die,) he is a murderer: the murderer fhall furely be put to death.

17 And if he fmite him with throwing a he is a murderer: the murderer thall furely flone, (wherewith he may die,) and he die,

be put to death.

18 Or if he fmite him with an hand-weapon of wood, (wherewith he may die,) and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer fhall Surely be put to death.

19 The revenger of blood himfelf shall flay the murderer: when he meeteth him he shall flay him.

20 But if he thruft him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;

21 Or in emnity fmite him with his hand that he die: he that fmote him thall furely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall flay the murderer when

he mecteth him.

22 But if he thruft him fuddenly without enmity, or have caft upon him any thing without laying of wait;

23 Or with any tone wherewith a man may die, feeing him not, and caft it upon him that he die, and was not his enemy, neither fought his harm:

24 Then the congregation fhall judge between the flayer and the revenger of blood according to thefe judgments:

25 And the congregation thall deliver the flayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation thall rettore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled and he thall abide in it unto the death of the highprieft, which was anointed with the holy oil. 16 But if the layer thall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;

27 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the layer; he thall not be guilty of blood:

28 Becaufe he thould have remained in the

city of his refuge until the death of the highprielt: but after the death of the high-priett che flayer thall return into the land of his poffeffion.

29 So thefe things fhall be for a ftatute of Judgment unto you, throughout your generations, in all your dwellings.

30 Whofo killeth any perfon, the murderer fhall be put to death by the mouth of wit nelles: but one witnefs thall not testify against any perfon to caufe him to die.

31 Moreover, ye shall take no fatisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death; but he thail furely be put to death.

31 And ye shall take no fatisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he thould come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the high-prieit.

33 so ye fhall not pollute the land wherein ye are; for blood it defileth the land and the land cannot be cleanfed of the blood that ished therein, but by the blood of him that

hed it.

38 But Jofhua, the fon of Nun, which standeth before thee, he thall go in thither: encourage him; for he thall caufe Ifrael to inherit it. 39 Moreover, your little ones, which ye faid fhould be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they thall poffefs it.

40 But as for yon, turn ye, and take your journey into the wilderness, by the way of

the Red fea.

41 Then ye anfwered and faid unto me,We have finned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And, when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42 And the LORD faid unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight, for I am not among you; left ye be fmitten before your

enemies.

43 Solfpake unto you, and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went prefumptuously up into the hill.

44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out againft you, and chafed you as bees do, and deftroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

45 And ye returned, and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there. CHAP. II.

The flory is continued touching the Edomites, 9 the Moabites, 17 the Ammonites, 24 and Sihon the Amorite.

Hen we turned, and took our journey into Tthe wildernefs, by the way of the Red fea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compaffed mount seir many days.

2 And the LORD fpake unto me, faying, 3 Ye have compaffed this mountain long enough: turn ye northward.

4 And command thou the people, faying, Ye are to pass through the coatt of your brethren the children of Efau, which dwell in Seir, and they fhall be afraid of you take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore.

5 Meddle not with them; for 1 will not give you of their land, no not fo much as a foot-breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Efau for a pofleflion.

6 Ye fhall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall alfo buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

7 For the LORD thy God hath bleffed thee in all the works of thy hand; he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: thefe forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou haft lacked nothing.

8 And when we paffed by from our brethren the children of Elau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned, and paffed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

9 And the LORD faid unto me, Diftrefs not the Moabites, neither contend with them in

10 The Emims dwelt therein in times paft, a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakims;

Which alfo were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emiros. 2 The Horims alfo dwelt in Seir beforetime, but the children of Efau fucceeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their ftead, as rael did unto the land of his poffeffion, which the LORD gave unto them.

13 Now rise up, faid I, and get you over the brook Zered: and we went over the brook Zered.

14 And the space in which we came from Kadeth-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were watted out from among the host, as the LORD fware unto them.

15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the hoft, until they were confumed.

16 So it came to pafs, when all the men of war were confumed and dead from anting the people,

17 That the LORD fpake unto me, faying 18 Thou art to pals over through Ar, the coaft of Moab, this day.

19 And when thou comeft nigh over against thechildren of Ammon, diftrefs them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any pol feffion, because I have given it unto the chil dren of Lot for a poffeffion.

20 (That alfo was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time, and the Ammonites call them amgummims

21 A people great, and many, and tall as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them, and they fucceeded them, and dwelt in their flead:

22 As he did to the children of Efau which dwelt in Scir, when he destroyed the Hortens from before them; and they fucceeded them, and dwelt in theirftead, even unto this day

23 And the Avims which dwelt in Ha rim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 Rise ye up, take your journey, w passover the river Arnon: behold, i have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, k of Heihbon, and his land; begin to policis and contend with him in battle..

25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee, and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who tha hear report of thee, and thall tremble and te in anguith becaufe of thee.

26 And I fent meilengers out of the w dernels of Kedemoth mito Sihon king af Hethbon, with words of peace, faying.

27 Let me pals through thy land: I wi go along by the highway, I will neitherum unto the right hand nor to the left.

28 Thou thalt fell me meat formoney, 4 I may cat; and give me water for mune, that I may drink; only I will pats throng on my feet,
