Ermit us, most gracious Sovereign, with the profoundest Humility and Submission to fay, we always thought the Prefervation of the Trade of the Kingdam, and the Ballance of Power in Europe, to be the main Motives for the late War. A Caufe fo just was favoured by Heaven; and the Arms and Virtue of the Troops of Britain, with those of her Confederates, prevailed with fuch a Train of unparalelled Succeffes, that we concluded our felves upon the Point of being Happy to the utmost of our Wishes.

But when we were just feizing the Prize of our Conquests, with Horror we call to mind,

that

that the British Arms were furprizingly with- Vol. IX. drawn, and our faithful Allies abandoned Sad were the Confequences that enfued!

The Reputation of the Kingdom was funk to Contempt, the humble Stile of the Enemy was quite altered, and France from being in a Condition of fuing for a Peace, became the Dictator of it to thofe that had Conquered: The People were mocked with Affurances of being Free from the Danger of a Neighbouring Fortress, and the beft Branches of their Trade were Exchanged for Chimeras.

Our Holy Church too was in Danger of being given up to Popery, our Civil Rights to Tyranny, and the way preparing for the Pre

tender.

All that had been gained by a Profusion of Blood and Treasure, in a glorious and fuccessful War, was thrown up, and a Free-born People brought within View of Slavery, when the Almighty once more interpofed, by feating on the Throne Your Sacred Majefty, His great Vicegerent.

We Your Majesty's most Dutiful Subjects can never think of that Providential Period of Time, in which the Kingdom was thus relieved from Diftrefs, by Your Majesty's most happy Acceffion to the Imperial Crown of Great Britain, but our Hearts are full of unutterable Transports of Joy.

We think our felves fnatcht from Perdition, and established upon a Rock of Security: Credit, (the best Indication of the People's Satisfaction) Springs up again, and the Spoils and Remains of our Commerce and Property, are, we hope, recovering and enlarging.

The King's Answer.

We fee a Proteftant Prince on the Throne, adorn'd with high Virtues, and bleffed with a numerous Progeny of Proteftant Succeffors, Defenders of the Faith, and the Established Church, which is planted, and now again fenced in by the Right Hand of God.

We cannot forbear, now we are at Your Majefty's Feet upon this happy Occafion, to tender our hearty Thanks for the Honour con•ferred upon us by your Royal Commission; and we affure Your Majesty, that the Power entrufted with us, is in the Hands of fuch as were never tainted with any Inclination to the Pretender; fuch as ever had in Deteftation those who meart Ill to the Proteftant Succeffion, or the Author of it, our other glorious Deliverer King William; fuch as being Lovers of the Church and State, are ready to defend both with the Arms committed to their Charge; and fuch as devoutly Pray, that Your Majesty and your Royal Iffue may Reign over this Kingdom, and all other Your Majefty's Dominions, till Time fhall be no more. To which his Majefty was pleased to make the following moft gracious Anfwer:

I

Thank

you for this Addrefs, in which you exprefs fo much Duty and Loyalty to me, and fo just a Concern for the Honour and Intereft of your Country.

Both this Addrefs, from fo confiderable a Body, and the King's Anfwer, made a great Noife throughout Great Britain, being generally look'd upon as the Forerunner of an Impeachment in the enfuing Parliament. However, the late Managers feem'd to recover fresh Courage,

even from their approaching Danger: Vol. IX. For the Lord Viscount Bolingbroke being, about this Time, come to Town, several Interviews and Conferences pafs'd between Conferences him and the late Lord Chancellor, the among the Bishop of R-r, the D. of 0-d, Chief of the the Earl of St-d, Mr. Arthur Moore, late Miniftry. and (as fome pretend) the Earl of Oxford: Wherein, no Doubt, they confulted, how to weather the Impending Storm. But tho' the Chief of the Tory Party may be allow'd not to have been wholly Difpirited, yet fome of them, must be own'd to have, been entirely loft to all Reafon, and Policy, in Writing, Printing and Difperfing a Libel, which contradicts all their Pretences and Profeffions of Loyalty and Affection to King GEORGE, and the prefent Settlement. The Libel, I mean, is entituled, ENGLISH ADVICE TO THE Account of a FREEHOLDERS OF GREAT-BRITAIN; English AdAnd feems to be the Laft Effort of a vice to the Defperate Sinking PARTY, being indeed, Freeholders of but a Compound of Malicious Slanders, England. Notorious Forgeries, and Treafonable Suggeftions: So that the Publifhing of it instead of ferving their Turn, for whofe Benefit it was intended, would certainly have had a quite contrary Effect, at least with all good Men, and fix'd an Indelible Odium on thofe very Perfons, it was calculated to juftify. However, there being but too many, among the Unthinking Multitude, who, by former Delufions, and a continued Train of Intoxication, are prepared to receive any Infection; and not a few others, who, for want of proper Means of Information, may be impofed
