Leiden and 's Gravenhage, 1858-1905 20 0 0 3011 VERITY (R.). RHOPALOCERA PALAEARCTICA. ICONOGRAPHIE et DESCRIPTION des PAPILLONS DIURNES de la REGION PALÉARCTIQUE. Pts. 1-4, roy. 4to., all yet published; in wrappers Florence, 1905-06

This work, which is to be completed in 30 pts., will contain about 500 pp. of text, geographical charts, illustrations in the text, numerous plates in plain collotype, and at least 60 plates in colours.

The price of each pt. is 38 6d net.

"Of late years an increasing interest has been shown in the study of the lepidoptera of the palaearctic region, and collections have become more and more numerous. However entomologists have always had considerable difficulty in procuring the rare and costly works and the innumerable publications in which the literature on the subject is to be found. There is therefore a distinct need of a synthetic work which would unite all the information on each species and at the same time by its moderate price would be within the reach of every student.

"It is this want which the author of the proposed work on Rhopalocera Palaearctica now offered to you, has endeavoured to satisfy. His intention is not only to render the work useful to the amateur for the classification of his specimens, but to give it a really scientific value by an exhaustive study of all the geographical, seasonal and accidental forms of each species.

"Few persons have any idea of the extent to which many species vary, and how

0 14 0

vain it is to imagine that one or two specimens can suffice to represent each species
either in a collection or in an iconographic work. It is this defective knowledge which
has led to so many errors in the creation of varieties and aberrations and has made
synonyms so numerous and confusing.

"The author is convinced that long and minute descriptions are absolutely insuffi-
cient to give an exact idea of the differences which distinguish contiguous forms, and
that this object can only be accomplished by figures reproducing as correctly as possible
the characteristic types. He proposes therefore to give special attention to the illus-
trations, sparing no expense to give the number of individual specimens necessary, and
reproducing not only all the species but nearly all the varieties which have a real
value." .. The Author's prospectus.
