The above is a portion of the "Armorial de France, Angleterre, Ecosse, Allemagne, Italie, etc." of Gilles Le Bouvier dit Berry, premier roi d'armes de Charles VII, roi de France, which was written about 1450, but not published till 1866, when it was edited by M. Vallet de Viriville. Dr. Woodward, the well-known genealogist, to whom this copy belonged, has emblasoned all the coats of arms, besides adding valuable MS. notes to nearly all of them.

131 HOLME (Randle). THE ACADEMY OF ARMORY; or a Storehouse of Armory and Blazon. SECOND ISSUE, with copper-engraved plates; wanting the dedication to William and Mary, 1701-INDEX to Names of Persons contained in the Academy of Armory and Blazon by Randle Holme, VERY SCARCE, 1821;-together 2 vols., folio, Cambridge calf extra 1701-1821 10 10 0 The engraved title was not issued with the copies dated 1701, no doubt owing to the Arms of James II forming portion of the design. A dedication to William III and Mary was inserted. The concluding address is said to have suggested to Dr. Johnson the form of the preface to his Dictionary.

This work holds a very important place in the select circle of books relating to Freemasonry issued in the 17th century. Chapter 9 of Book III commences with the following paragraph: I cannot but honour the Fellowship of the Masons because of its Antiquity; and the more, as being a member of that Society, called Free-masons. In being conversant among them I have observed the use of these severall Tools following, some whereof I have seen born in coats of Armour." After which follows the FIRST PRINTED DESCRIPTION of the tools used in Masonic circles. HOWARD AND CRISP, see nos. 62-65.

This appears to have been an official document. There is only one alphabet, which
comprises the entire nobility, including those who were inscribed in the Libro d'Oro
in 1645, 1664, 1666, 1684, 1716, for having made costly gifts to the Public Treasury
on occasions of warfare and trouble to the state. The greater part of the book was
written in 1645; but the additions were made from time to time.

The third edition, which consisted of pp. xxviii and 883, was privately printed in 1893, and had long been unprocurable. The present has been brought down to date. This work is so well known that it is hardly necessary to say that it is absolutely indispensable to every genealogist. It consists of an Alphabetical Index to all Visitations and printed Genealogies of English families, interspersed with very numerous references to MS. sources in the Heralds College and the various English Collections.

The recent death of Dr. G. W. Marshall causes a great gap in the ranks of the
modern genealogists who have done so much to revive an interest in their fascinating
study.

Copies on Large Paper are very rare. This copy has the plate on page 82 (misnumbered 84) of Book III repeated on both sides of a separate leaf before the title. The small plate of Coins in the margin of page 103 of Book III is repeated on page 101. Also the plate on page 64 of the same Book is repeated on a separate leaf opposite page 68, with an oval plate pasted on the back containing the coats of arms referred to on page 69. I have not seen these duplicate plates or the oval plate, none of which is mentioned by Lowndes, in any other copy.

The Index contains 500 references.
