2187 SCOTT (Sir Walter). Original Manuscript of "The
History of Scotland," specially written for Dr.
Dionysius Lardner for publication in his Cabinet

"The
Author was invited to undertake this general Sketch of
Scottish History in connection with a similar abridgment
of English History by Sir James Mackintosh, and a
History of Ireland by Thomas Moore, Esquire." The
first volume has on its flyleaf an inscription in the auto-
graph of Dr. Lardner: "As Editor of the Cabinet
Cyclopædia I have preserved this and the accompanying
volumes, the latter dictated by Scott to Laidlaw. Phila.
5 Nov. 1842. DION LARDNER.

The manuscript is in one 4to. and two folio volumes,
enclosed in mauve morocco leather case, the first volume
only, as stated by Dr. Lardner, being in the autograph of
Sir Walter, the other two having been dictated, but contain
various additions and corrections in the author's autograph.

Commonly known as Archbishop Laud's Book of Common Prayer, as he and
Bishop Wren were associated with the Scottish bishops in preparing it, though Laud
asserted that he had been desirous of introducing the English Book of Common
Prayer without alteration. The book was very unpopular and was soon withdrawn.

The attempt to use it in St. Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh, on Sunday, 23 July, 1637,
occasioned a riot, which is popularly said to have been started by a woman named
Jenny Geddes who flung her stool at the head of the Bishop of Edinburgh, David
Lindsay.

The above is a copy of the issue without the catchword "Certaine on the last
page, which refers to the two leaves "Certaine Godly Prayers", forming part of
a supplement which it was decided not to proceed with.
