The task of composing the letterpress to accompany Mr. Tyrwhitt's paintings
was offered to the present writer, an occasional visitor at those cities, as a relief from

This is the first detailed account of the Egyptian remains in Sinai, the result of thorough excavations, copying, and photographing. The oldest dated sculpture in the world, the ancient mines and expeditions, and the temple of Serabít, are important in Egyptian archæology. The results in chronology are dealt with, and a revision is here given of the dates in Egyptian history according to the most recent results. The Semitic discoveries are entirely new, including the system of Semitic ritual centuries before Judaism, the common use of a Semitic writing at that early age, the conditions of climate, and the route of the Exodus, the whole question of the numbers of the Israelites down to the monarchy, and the evidences of early documents in the Pentateuch. The materials and discussions of this work are not drawn from any previous publication.
