Mr. Stoddard was the last survivor of the time which has been called the Golden Age of American Letters. The Recollections which he had been engaged upon for a long time were on their way to the printer when he died in May. It is peculiarly fortunate that his reminiscences have been preserved, for they are not only delightful on the personal side and full of entertaining anecdotes, but they also form in a sense an intimate literary history of our country for over fifty years.

Stubbs (Charles William). Cambridge and its Story. Roy. 4to., LARGE PAPER, pp. xiv, 291, with frontispiece in photogravure, 24 lithographs and other illustrations by HERBERT RAILTON, the lithographs tinted by FANNY RAILTON, and A MOUNTED ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING BY THE SAME ARTIST INSERTED; cloth, gilt top, uncut 1903

Only 100 copies of the large paper edition have been issued.

For a new and elaborate work on a subject of such wide interest as the Town and University of Cambridge, few words of introduction would at any time be needed. When, however, as in the present instance, the authorship may be claimed for a scholar of no less eminence than the Dean of Ely; and, moreover, when so exceptional an array of artistic features as that provided by Mr. Herbert Railton forms a part of the equipment of the volume, further comment becomes very nearly superfluous.

By JAMES A. ARNOTT and JOHN WILSON. Roy. folio, 3 parts; in portfolios

The Palace of the Petit Trianon, while it possesses an interest to many on account of its historical associations with Marie Antoinette and her court, is chiefly interesting to architects and others as being a complete example of French architecture of the best period of the 18th century, and as the French styles have within recent years received considerable attention from members of the architectural profession and from those engaged in the allied arts, the authors believe that the publication of drawings illustrating this building in its entirety will be of assistance to those seeking inspiration whilst working in this style.
