NOTES AND HELPS THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER "The Ancient Mariner" is one of the immortal poems of our language. It should be read chiefly for its beauty. The beauty of its language should be appreciated. The words are very simple; sometimes they are old-fashioned, as ken for know, uprist for uprose: often they are alliterative, as in the lines "The furrow followed free," and "That made the breeze to blow." Always they are beautiful. The poem should be read aloud. The beauty of the rhyme and the meter should be appreciated. Some of the lines do not rhyme, in other lines the middle of the line rhymes with the end. The meter you can study out for yourselves. Read one of the lines. You will notice that it is made up of heavy (accented) syllables and light syllables. Count the number of heavy syllables. Is the number the same as in other lines? Which comes first, the heavy syllable or the light syllable? Is this true of all lines? In the second stanza of the poem, all the lines are alike, light-heavy, light-heavy. But in the first stanza all the lines are not alike. Two of them have "feet" that go light-lightheavy. And in the ninth stanza there are two lines in which the feet start with a heavy syllable. Notice points like these carefully, and soon you will be able to feel them without specially noticing them; and when you have learned to do that, your enjoyment of poetry will have become keener. But there is something more important than appreciating the words and the rhyme and meter of this poem. That is to appreciate its wonderful imagery. It has been said that there is a picture in every stanza. Is this true? Be sure that you see every scene distinctly, as if you were an artist who had been commissioned to paint as many pictures as he could find in the entire poem. For example, in the twelfth stanza of Part I, try to get the picture of the ship driven by the gale, with her prow digging into the deep, trying to get away from a great howling creature in the air, from whose black shadow she can never escape. Remember that a mental picture is not only what one sees, in imagination, but also what one hears and feels in imagination. |
