"We find in Strype's Annals, III. i. 272, that Cardinal Allen wrote this in answer

to Execution of Justice in England, written by Lord Burleigh. Cardinal Allen's answer was replied to by J. Stubbs in a Tract which he called Vindication of the English Justice. Strype's Ann. II. ii. 305. It is remarkable that this Vindication of Queen Elizabeth's Government should be written by the same Stubbs in 1587, who in 1579 had his right hand barbarously cut off with a butcher's knife and mallet for having written "The discouerie of a gaping Gulphe" to dissuade the merciless Elizabeth from the impolicy of a French Marriage. Such was the justice and mercy of the good Queen Elizabeth!" MS. note.

A new edition of this code of Laws was printed in Madrid in 1781, with a Prologo and some additions, all of which have been

subjoined in MS. at the end of this copy of 1569, which being the most esteemed

edition was copied in the new edition of 1781. A reference to the MS. Prologo at the end of this volume will best explain the enactment of the Fuero Real by Alonso el Sabio, and the resistance of the Castilians. It was first printed in 1500-again 1534 and 1544.

These are three scarce tracts printed by Gormontius, who has the credit of having

been the first to introduce at Paris Greek

and Hebrew Types. The two first have no date, but may be presumed to be of the same date with the last. Panzer, Vol. VIII. 33. This edition of Aleandri Tabulæ however is not known to Panzer.

ALSOP, GEORGE. A character of the Province of Mary-land, wherein is described in four distinct parts, (viz.) I. The situation, and plenty of the province. II. The laws, customs and natural demeanor of the inhabitants. III. The worst and best usage of a Mary-land servant, opened in view. IV. The Traffique, and vendable commodities of the Countrey. The map is frequently wanting, and the head is very rare. There are several pieces of poetry in this curious little volume.

Much may be learnt from the Portu

guese accounts of Abyssinia, especially from the very rare and not less curious work of Francisco Alvarez, the first European who ever returned from that country to tell the secrets of his prison land.

There is a curious account of his interview with Prester John, and of his being entertained with "imbandigioni," which Alvarez is shocked to mention as "pieces of raw flesh with warm blood." It appears from the preface addressed to John III. that this original edition was prepared with great care, and that Alvarez made a journey to Paris expressly to engage the best printers

for the work.

This translation, published by Selves, is valuable because it has the addition of se

veral letters "Cartas de las Indias Orientales," which make an interesting appendix not connected with Ethiopia.

PRINTED UPON VELLUM. The only copy that can be traced of this work is that quoted by Panzer and Denis Supp. from the Pinelli Cat., where even upon paper it is termed "libellus rarissimus." No senot in the Royal Library at Paris, or mencond copy upon vellum is known. It is tioned by Van Praet.
