1714. EORGE I. duke of Brunf- | Aug. 1. wick-Lunenburgh, and elector of Hanover, fucceeded to the crown on the demise of queen Anne, by virtue of feveral acts of parliament, for fecuring the Proteftant fucceffion.

He was born May 28, 1660, and was the eldeft fon of Erneft-Auguftus, bishop of Of naburg, duke of Hanover, and elector of Brunfwick-Lunenburg, by the princefs Sophia, fifth and youngest daughter of Frederic V. elector Palatine and king of Bobemia, and the princess Elizabeth, daughter of James I. king of England.

Upon the death of the Queen, the PrivyCouncil being affembled according to the act of 4 & 5 of Anne, for the better fecurity of her Majefty's perfon, and the fucceffion of the crown of England in the Proteftant line; three inftruments of the fame tenor were produced by the archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord-chancellor, and Monfieur Kreynberg the refident of Hanover, under the hand and feal of the elector of Brunswick, his then Majefty, nominating nineteen perfons, to be added to the feven great officers appointed by the faid act, to compofe the Regency.
