Thy Spirit through the Word, in the unity of the divine essence and in the Trinity of Thy glorious Persons, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Mediator between Thyself and men, I come to Thee. For His sake I beseech Thee to accept this brief account herein given of Thy loving-kindness and favour bestowed on me, lo, these many years in this world, from my earliest infancy to the present time.

For having preserved me during the years of my weakness, ignorance and folly; and for having called me out of the darkness of nature into Thy marvellous light; and for having caused me to know Thy name and to put my trust in Thee.

Pardon and forgive for Thy Son's sake, whatever of pride or vain glory that may to Thine allseeing eye appear in this recital. May the blood of that glorious "Him" who died, the just for the unjust, be very efficacious in cleansing from every stain of sin the feeble effort of Thy servant in his endeavour to glorify Thee. I desire to leave on record an account of Thy fatherly goodness to me; in sickness and health; in adversity and in prosperity. I pray Thee, too, that if it shall please Thee to keep me awhile longer here below, that the remainder of my days may be devoted to Thy service, that I may serve Thee in the newness of the Spirit. I thank Thee, O Thou Father of my mercies, for having given unto me a loving God

fearing wife, who has been a partner of my joys and sorrows, and a help-mate, lo, these many years. Kindly, O Lord, bless her abundantly, and grant unto her the comforts of the Holy Ghost. I bless Thee, too, for the dear children that Thou hast graciously given unto me. Grant that they may be Thy children. O Lord, preserve them; bless them; save them; and keep them in Thy fear from the temptations of Satan; from the allurements of the world; from vanity and all sin; and from every form of evil and superstition; teach them by Thy Holy Spirit and make them wise unto salvation, so that they may dwell with Thee for ever in heaven. For Christ's sake. Amen.

APPENDIX

BY R. JOHNSON.

"With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him My salvation."-Psa. xci. 16.

To complete and fill in the closing chapters of the life of my dearly beloved and honoured father now falls to my lot. It pleased the Lord to spare His servant to a good old age, in the exercise and enjoyment of his faculties. A quarter of a century after he had concluded this autobiography he was still living, and still able to conduct a fair amount of business, in the way of writing letters. The intervening years were filled up in various ways. First, in the public affairs mentioned at the close of his biography, and later in a more private and retired way. Photography was his great hobby, and later, process work and the preparing of blocks for printing and publishing photographs, made by himself. He also learned to ride a bicycle at the age of 87 or 88, and might frequently be seen about the town on his machine. Having at this time given the management of his business affairs to a large extent into other hands, his time was spent at home in these his various pursuits.

The study of Greek also gave him much pleasure
