Mat. was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Luke But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

LukeAnd the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what re they like?

Mat. But whereunto shall I liken this generation? Mat. It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, 17. and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced:

We have mourned to you, and ye

have not lamented.

Luke They are like unto children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced:

We have mourned to you, and ye

have not wept.

Luke For John the Baptist came neither eating bread, aor drinking wine,

And ye say, He hath a devil.

Mat. For John came neither eating nor drinking,
And they say, He hath a devil.

Mat. The Son of man came eating and drinking;
and they say,

Behold, a man gluttonous,and a wine-bibber,
A friend of publicans and sinners:
Luke The Son of man is come eating and drinking;
and ye say,

Behold, a gluttonous man,and a wine-bibber,
A friend of publicans and sinners:

Luke But wisdom is justified of all her children.
Mat. But wisdom is justified of her children.
Mat. Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein

most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not, &c. to the end of the chapter. Sect.43. In Capernaum, Jesus dines with Simon the Pharisee; and is anointed for the first time. LukeAnd one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into, &c. to the end of the chapter.

Sect. 44. Jesus is accompanied to the passover by pious women who minister unto him. And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching, &c. to ver. 4.

SECOND PASSOVER.

Sect. 45. The infirm man at Bethesda is cured during the passover.

5 John After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, &c. to the end of

N. B. Here Mark ii. 23. to the end, and ch. iii, 1,— 12. comes in between ver. 21. and 22. of ch. iii. of that evangelist; also Luke vi. 1,-11. comes in between ver. 3. and 4. of ch. viii. of that evangelist. Sect. 46. The disciples pluck the ears of corn on the Sabbath day, in some field nigh to Ferusalem. Mat. At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath-day through the corn, and his disciples were an hungered,

And began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat. Mar. And it came to pass, that he went through the corn ields on the Sabbath day.

And his disciples began, as they went, to pluck

the ears of corn.

1 Luke And it came to pass, on the second Sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields;

And his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

2 Luke And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath days? Mar. And the Pharisees said unto him,

Behold, why do they on the Sabbath day that which is not lawful?

Mat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not law. ful to do upon the Sabbath day.

Mat. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did

When he was an hungered, and they that were
with him:

Mar. And he said unto them, Have ye never read what
David did

When he had need, and was an hungered, he,

and they that were with him?

3 Luke And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did

When himself was an hungered, and they which

were with him?

4 Luke How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shew-bread,

And gave also to them that were with him,
Which is not lawful to eat but for the
priests alone?

Mar. How he went into the house of God in the days of
Abiathar the high-priest, and did eat the shew-bread,
Which is not lawful to eat but for the priests,
And gave also to them which were with him?
Mat. How he entered into the house of God, and did eat
the shew-bread,

Which was not lawful for him to eat, neither
for them which were with him, but only for
the priests.

Mat. Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto you, that in this place is one greater than the temple. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy

and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

Mar. And he said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

Mar. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath. Mat. For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath day. 5 Luke And he said unto them, that the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath.

Sect. 47. Jesus cures a man with a withered hand, in a synagogue nigh to Jerusalem; then retires into

Galilee.

Mat. And when he was departed thence, he went into synagogue.

And behold, there was a man which had bis hand withered.

Mar. And he entered again into the synagogue,

And there was a man there which had a withered haud.

6 Luke And it came to pass also on another Sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught;

And there was a man whose right hand was withered.

7 Luke And the Scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the Sabbath day,

That they might find an accusation against him. Mar. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day,

That they might accuse him.

Mar. And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.

SLuke But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the mids.

Luke And he arose and stood forth.

Mat. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days? that they might accuse him. 9 Luke Then Jesus said unto them, 1 will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the Sabbath days to do good, or

to do evil?

To save life, or to destroy it?

Mar. And he saith unto them,

Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil?

To save life, or to kill?

Mar. But they held their peace.

Mat. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.

Mar. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand.

Mat. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole like as the other.

Mar. And he stretched it out; and his hand was restored whole as the other.

LukeAnd he did so; and his hand was restored whole as the other.

11 Luke And they were filled with madness,

Luke And communed one with another what they might
do to Jesus.

Mar. And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took
counsel (v00189) with the Herodians
against him, how they might destroy him.
Mat. Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council
against him, (voor tabor) how they might
destroy him.

Mat. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from
thence:

And great multitudes followed him. Mar. But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea:

And a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond Jordan, and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.

Mat. And he healed them all,

And charged them that they should not make him known.

Mar. And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him, because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he had healed many, insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him; as many as had plagues. And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

And he straitly charged them, that they should
not make him known.

Mat. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by
Esaias, &c. to verse 22.

N. B. Here the natural order of Mark and Luke returns.
Sect. 48. In Capernaum the Pharisees a second time as-

cribe Christ's miracles to Beelzebub. (See §36.
86.) They ask the sign from heaven the first
time. (See §68.) Our Lord's mother comes
to him the first time. (See § 53.)

Mat. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb; and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

But

Mat. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said,

This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by
Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

Mar. And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem
said, He hath Beelzebub,

And by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

Mat. And Jesus knew their thoughts.

Mat. And said unto them,

Every kingdom divided against itself, is brought to desolation:

And every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.

Mar. And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

And if a house be divided against itself,

that house cannot stand.

Mar. And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided,
He cannot stand, but hath an end.

Mat. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against
himself;

How shall then his kingdom stand?

Mat. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Mat. Or else, how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods,

Except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

Mar. No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods,

Except he will first bind the strong man, and then he will spoil his house,

Mat. He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

Mat. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men;

But the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Mar. Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven un-. to the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme;

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy
Ghost, hath never forgiveness, but is in danger
of eternal damnation.

Mat. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of
man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever speak-
eth against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven
him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come.
Mar. Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
