During the month of September there were received at the Library, by purchase, 586 volumes and 304 pamphlets; by gift, 1,008 volumes and 3,175 pamphlets, and by exchange, 44 volumes and 157 pamphlets; making a total of 1,638 volumes and 3,636 pamphlets.

There were catalogued 1,614 volumes and 2,366 pamphlets, for which were written 9,091 cards, in addition to which 2,114 slips were written for, and 11,325 cards received from, the copying machine.

The following table shows the number of readers, and the number of volumes consulted, in both the Astor and Lenox Branches of the Library, also the number of visitors to the Print Exhibit at the Lenox, during the month:

The most popular books of the month were (in non-fiction): Wentworth's Algebra," Waddington's "Letters of a Diplomat's Wife," Meyers's "History of Rome"; (adult fiction) Allen's "Mettle of the Pasture," Ward's "Lady Rose's Daughter," London's "Call of the Wild"; (juvenile fiction) Lang's "Red Fairy Book," Clemens's "Huckleberry Finn," Aldrich's "Story of a Bad Boy."
