The most important gifts received at the Library during the month of December were: From Mr. William Loring Andrews a copy of his "Bibliopegy in the United States" (New York, 1902); from the American Bible Society, 24 volumes and 588 pamphlets; from the Belgian Minister of Finance and Public Works, 41 volumes and 10 pamphlets; from the Cuban Secretary of State, 78 numbers of the Official Gazette; from various Dutch cities, a large number of municipal publications; from Alexander Kinloch, a copy of his Russian Conversation Grammar; from Mlle. Leclère, 2 volumes; from Captain A. T. Mahan, 19 volumes and 5 pamphlets relating to Nelson's action at Naples, including "Nelson at Naples. . . " by F. P. Badham, 1900, and "Nelson at Naples," by A. T. Mahan, etc.; from the Executors of the late Henry G. Marquand, a copy of the illustrated edition of the Catalogue of his collection of art and literary property; from Father Thomas C. Middleton, 2 volumes and 15 pamphlets, all Philippine imprints; and from Hon. Thomas C. Platt, 11 volumes of the Journals of the Executive Session of the Senate of the United States, 1869-1891, of which only 250 copies were printed.

The exhibition of American wood engravings at the Lenox Branch was continued, but that at the Astor was replaced by reproductions of plates from the Dresden gallery.

Frederick Saunders, formerly librarian of the Astor Library, died in Brooklyn December 12th, 1902, and was buried there on the 14th. He was 95 years old and had been employed as librarian at the Astor Library from September, 1859, to December 30, 1896, when he was retired at his own request, after attaining the age of 88.
