A soul inured to pain,

To hardship, grief, and loss,
Bold to take up, firm to sustain,
The consecrated cross.

Eleventh Day.

"THE highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul."

The subduing of our own passions is more excellent than to have the whole world subdued to our will; for in the one case we are masters of ourselves; in the other, we are slaves to the worst of masters.

Every duty well performed,

Every weakness struggled down,

These are undecaying trophies,

These shall win a deathless crown.

Twelfth Day.

"KEEP yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life."

Those that can bring their hearts to delight in Christ, know most of his ways. Love is the best entertainer of truth, and when it is not entertained in the love of it, being so lovely as it is, it leaveth the heart, and will stay no longer.

I ask thee for a thankful love,
Through constant watching wise,
To meet the glad with cheerful smile,
And wipe the weeping eyes;

A heart at leisure from itself,

To soothe and sympathize.

Thirteenth Day.

"GOD is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea."

Nothing doth so establish the mind, amidst the rolling and turbulency of present things, as both to look above them and beyond them; above them, to the steady and good hand by which they are ruled; and beyond them, to the sweet and beautiful home to which by that hand they may be brought.

Let the world despise and leave me,

Once they left my Saviour too;
Let all human hopes deceive me,

Thou wilt never be untrue;
And whilst thou shalt smile upon me,
God of wisdom, love, and might!
Foes may hate and friends disown me,
Yet the darkness shall be light.

Fourteenth Day.

"THE Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate."

Being cast down by the mighty hand of God, we must learn to lie still and quiet under it, till the same hand that cast us down raise us up, if we would share of this promised lifting up. It is not the being cast down into humbling circumstances by the providence of God, but the coming down of our spirit under them by the grace of God, that brings us within the compass of this promise.

Help me to break the heavy chains
The world has round me thrown,
And know the glorious liberty

Of an obedient son.

Fifteenth Day.

"WHEN He giveth quietness, who then can make trouble?"

The true use to be made of all the imperfections of which we are conscious, is neither to justify nor condemn them, but to present them before God, and, seeking his aid, to remove them, conforming our will to his, and remaining in peace; for peace is the divine order, in whatsoever state we

are.

Quiet from God! how beautiful to keep

This treasure the All-merciful hath given; To feel, when we awake and when we sleep, Its incense round us, like a breath from heaven!
