5 There shall we join, and never tire,
To sing immortal lays;

And with the bright, seraphic choir,
Sound forth Immanuel's praise.

C. M.

Medfield. Barby.

483 Longing for the eternal Sabbath.

WHEN, dearest Saviour-when shall
Behold thee all serene;

Blest in perpetual Sabbath day,
Without a vail between?

2 Assist me while I wander here,
Amid a world of cares;
Incline my roving heart to pray,
And then accept my prayers.
3 Thy Spirit, O my Father, give,
To be my guide and friend;
To light my path to ceaseless joys-
Where Sabbaths never end.

484 Pleasing Remembrance of the Sabbath.
LORD, how delightful 'tis to see
A whole assembly worship thee!

At once they sing-at once they pray-
They hear of heaven, and learn the way.

2 I have been there, and still would go:
'Tis like the dawn of heaven below:
Not all that careless sinners say,
Shall tempt me to forget this day.
3 Oh write upon my memory, Lord,
The truths and precepts of thy word!
That I may break thy laws no more,
But love thee better than before.

4 With thoughts of Christ, and things divine,
Fill up this foolish heart of mine;

That, finding pardon through his blood,

I may lie down, and wake with God.

I LOVE to see the Lord below;
His church displays his grace;
But upper worlds his glory know,
And view him face to face.

Corinth.

2 I love to worship at his feet,
Though sin annoy me there;
But saints, exalted near his seat,
Have no assaults to fear.

3 I love to meet him in his court,
And taste his heavenly love;
But still his visits seem too short,
Or I too soon remove.

4 He shines-and I am all delight,
He hides-and all is pain:
When will he fix me in his sight,
And ne'er départ again!

Aff 5 O Lord, I love thy service now;
Thy church displays thy power;
mf But soon in heaven I hope to view
And praise thee evermore.

Ministers the Bearers of Glad Tidings.

HOW beauteous are their feet
Who stand on Zion's hill!

Who bring salvation on their tongues,
And words of peace reveal!

2 How charming is their voice!
How sweet their tidings are!
"Zion, behold thy Saviour King,
He reigns and triumphs here."
3 How happy are our ears,

That hear this joyful sound,
Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found!

4 How blessed are our eyes,
That see this heavenly light!
Prophets and kings desired it long,
But died without the sight.

5 The watchmen join their voice,
And tuneful notes employ;
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs,
And deserts learn the joy.

6 The Lord makes bare his arm Through all the earth abroad! ff Let every nation now behold Their Saviour and their God.

L. M.

Appleton. Sterling. 487 Christ's Commission to his Ministers. "GO preach my gospel," saith the Lord; "Bid the whole earth my grace receive: He shall be saved, that trusts my word,

f

And he condemned, who'll not believe.
2 I'll make your great commission known;
And ye shall prove my gospel true,
By all the works that I have done,
By all the wonders ye shall do.

3 Teach all the nations my commands;
I'm with you till the world shall end;
All power is trusted in my hands-

I can destroy-and I defend."

4 He spake-and light shone round his head;
On a bright cloud to heaven he rode:
They to the farthest nations spread

The grace of their ascended God.

L. M. Duke Street. Appleton. 488 The Ministry of divine Appointment. FATHER of mercies, in thy house, We pay our homage, and our vows, While with a grateful heart we share These pledges of our Saviour's care. 2 The Saviour, when to heaven he rose In splendid triumph o'er his foes, Scattered his gifts on men below, And wide his royal bounties flow.

3 Hence sprung th' apostle's honored name,
Sacred beyond all earthly fame;

In lowlier forms, to bless our eyes,
Pastors from hence, and teachers rise.
4 So shall the bright succession run
Through latest courses of the sun;
While unborn churches, by their care,
Shall rise and flourish, large and fair.

489 State and Prospects of the Heathen.

Jerauld.

HARK!-what mean those lamentations,
Rolling sadly through the sky?

[merged small][ocr errors]

"Tis the cry of heathen nations,
"Come, and help us, or we die !"
2 Hear the heathen's sad complaining-
Christians, hear their dying cry;
And, the love of Christ constraining,
Join to help them, ere they die.

Missionary Hymn.

FROM Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand,
Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand;
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

p 2 What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle-
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile?-
In vain, with lavish kindness,
The gifts of God are strown;
The heathen, in his blindness,
Bows down to wood and stone.
3 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
By wisdom from on high-
Shall we to man benighted
The lamp of life deny ?-
Salvation-oh, salvation!
The joyful sound proclaim,
Till earth's remotest nation
Has learnt Messiah's name.

4 Waft-waft, ye winds, his story;
And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole;
Till o'er our ransomed nature,
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,
Returns in bliss to reign.

491 Prevalence of Christianity promised.

GREAT God, is not thy promise pledged
To thine exalted Son,

f

That through the nations of the earth
Thy word of life shall run?

2 "Ask-and I give the heathen lands
For thine inheritance;

And to the world's remotest shores.
Thine empire shall advance."

3 From east to west, from north to south,
Then be his name adored:

Let earth, with all its millions, shout
Hosanna to the Lord!

Brewer. Duke Street.

THOUGH now the nations sit beneath
The darkness of o'erspreading death,
God will arise with light divine,
On Zion's holy towers to shine.

2 That light shall glance on distant lands,
And heathen tribes, in joyful bands,
Come with exulting haste to prove
The power and greatness of his love.

3 Lord, spread the triumphs of thy grace;
Let truth, and righteousness, and peace,
In mild and lovely forms, display
The glories of the latter day.

Grant them, Lord, the glorious light;
Now, from eastern coast to western,

Freely purchased, win the day!
