THE NEW YEAR.
We are brought by the good hand of our God upon us, to begin another year in this world. While grateful and penitent feelings must be awakened by a review of the past year, we cannot but look forward to the future without the deepest interest. It is not for us to say, what the year is to bring forth to each of us in the way either of duty or of trial. At all times it behoves us to be cultivating a close acquaintance with the God of our salvation, without whose aid we have no power to perform the one, or endure the other, At all times the immediate and private concerns of our salvation are enough to occupy our thoughts, and demand our most watchful and prayerful attention. But as we are passing on through life, there are signs of the times and peculiar events unfolding, which may well awaken our interest, and lead us to watch and be sober. We live in a very eventful period, when no one can say that all things continue as they have been. There is a grand and remarkable movement in the world. The spirit of change is working on all sides. Who can say where it will end, and to what it will lead ? As it respects the ultimate effect on the invisible church of Christ, we need fear no evil. At his bidding it is, that empires rise and fall, flourish and decay. And they do so for the furtherance of his kingdom. And who can tell but all the wars and rumours of wars, the fearful discords which are pulling in pieces the empires of the world, are but the tuning, as it were, of all the parts for the grand harmony, which shall usher in the triumphs of our adorable Redeemer throughout the world !
Now under the letting loose of this spirit of change, the Christian has not only to comfort himself with the good which shall spring out of the evil as it respects the reign of the Messiah, but he has to watch his own spirit that he be not led away with the error of the wicked. My king
