MARSH, CAPEN & LYON,

[blocks in formation]

send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger-
in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented
in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember
that thou in thy, life-time receivedst thy good things,
and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is
comforted, and thou art tormented. And, beside
all this, between us and you there is a great gulf
fixed: so that they which would pass from hence
to you cannot neither can they pass to us that
would come from thence. Then he said, I pray
thee, therefore, father, that thou wouldst send him
to my father's house, for I have five brethren; that
he may testify unto them, lest they also come into
this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him,
they have Moses and the prophets; let them hear
them. And he said, nay, father Abraham: but if
one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
And he said unto him, if they hear not Moses and
the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though
one rose from the dead.

SERMON IV.

MEN REWARDED ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS IN THE PRES-

ENT LIFE.

1 Peter iii. 10, 11.-For he that will love life and see
good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and
his lips that they speak no guile let him eschew
evil and do good, let him seek peace and ensue it.

SERMON VI.

THE SINNER MEETS WITH DESERVED PUNISHMENT.

1 Peter iv. 17, 18.-For the time is come that judgment
must begin at the house of God; and if it first be-
gin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey
not the gospel of God? And if the righteous
scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and
sinner appear?

SERMON VII.

THE NEW BIRTH.

John iii. 3.-Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a
man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 89

SERMON VIII.

THE CONDEMNATION OF FALSE BELIEF.

2 Thess. ii. 11, 12.—And for this cause God shall
send them strong delusion, that they should peneve
a lie; that they all might be damned who believe
not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 104

SERMON IX.

THE END OF THE WORLD.

St. Matt. xiii. 47-50.-Again, the kingdom of heav-
en is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and
gathered of every kind :-Which, when it was full,
they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the
good into vessels, but cast the bad away.-So shall
it be at the end of the world: the angels shall
come forth and sever the wicked from among the
just.-And shall cast them into the furnace of fire;
there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

SERMON X.

THE CHURCH OF CHRIST.

Eph. v. 25, 26, 27.—Husbands love your wives,
even as Christ also loved the church, and gave
himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse
it with the washing of water by the word; that he
might present it to himself a glorious church, not
having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but
that it should be holy, and without blemish.

SERMON XI.

DIVINE TRUTH, AS REPRESENTED BY TITHES.
Matachi iii. 10.—Bring ye all the tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house,
and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of
hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven,
and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not
be room enough to receive it.
