The Letters and Private Papers of William Makepeace Thackeray, Volum 1Garland, 1994 - 1557 pàgines These two volumes are intended as a supplement to the four-volume edition edited by the late Gordon N. Ray and published by Harvard U. Press and Oxford U. Press in 1945-46. They contain much important material, especially the 350 letters to Thackeray's publishers: Fraser, Bentley, Chapman and Hall, and particularly Bradbury and Evans and Smith. Thackeray's letters to women are especially interesting, for here he expresses his emotions and personality to an unparalleled extent. The letters, addressed to recipients from Ivan Turgenev and Giuseppe Garibaldi to Charles Dickens and Anthony Trollope, and to such friends as the Thomas Carlyles, reflect Thackeray's wide acquaintance with people of different backgrounds and social stations.
